Need advice on a 3 day install
« on: October 23, 2017, 02:46:30 PM »
Talked my HC into letting me install a new defensive scheme over the next couple weeks. I picked the DC46 because we're already a vanilla 5-3/man team, it fits our personnel, and it solves the issues we've been having defending off tackle. Should have about 4-5 hours of practice time before it goes live.

I've read all this stuff years ago, seen Clark install it live, but never run with it myself. I need advice on getting the big parts right, and can live with smaller details getting missed due to time restrictions. No idea what style of offense we need to get ready for, but the bare minimum would be knowing how to align to both unbalanced and 3x1 formations.

My ONLY advise.....no MP's allowed.

This D is  N A S T Y .....so employ nasty.

All of the pieces parts fit as one so there is no one thing that is more important than another.

If you plan on seeing a lot of spread formations then your MIKE must be a badass. The reason being vs the spread formations he will be left on an island at times. When that happens I suggest COVER 0 so that MIKE has a Cousin.

Get very good at bump and maul.  Get very good at posting up TE's properly.

You dont need a lot of stunts but one I would use is the Arizona call both left and right.

Once installed this D runs itself so bring a chair and enjoy the show.  :)

I actually did that once just to piss of my HC.

Understand you will get bare bones.

Def ends first - ricochet drill
Lbs - quarters drill
Cbs, lbs- man coverage drill
Fs - i forget  the name of the drill

You must teach each group...for 3 days each group gets 10 minutes. The 3 othe groups can do what ever...ide recommend speed drills or defensive basics.

After the basic drills flash card. Make everyone participate. If you have scout cards even better.

Thats 1 hour a day for 3 practices you should be ok for game day.

If you have more time to play with combine flash card and quarters drill.

Do you have others helping with the install ?

Great D. Vs spread we struggled. Your mike has to be a monster your playing spread teams. 3 days is perfect for install.

I’d go alignment assignment first as a group. Flash cards here then split them up into INDY’s. It’s a coaching intensive D to install then it runs itself. Biggest issues will be with the DT’s and DE’s. Their job is so simple so they make it complicated.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. Ran the basic install last night. Tilts, the three rules, bump and run, off tackle and sweep paths. It went ok. Sam and Will were the tougher positions to coach at first so I spent lot of time on them.

But, the HC changed his mind and is going to bail on a scheme change. He want's to fix our problems other ways. That's fine with me, I'd rather we do that now then get a bunch of half bought in guys on the staff second guess everything.

Wow. Seems a little late in the season to burn a practice.

Well, to be fair, our practices are really inefficient so not much time actually got wasted.  ::)  :D

Sometimes its just about the players not the scheme.  Scheme helps...  but in the end...just gotta win the 1v1

Fs - i forget  the name of the drill

1) Stand safety between two receivers throw to them and let FS read QB eyes.  Gradually increase distance between receivers.  Never look FS off.

2) Set 5 cones in a W:  start FS at middle top cone of W.  Coach with a football has the cones/FS in front of him.
Coach holds ball in run form in left hand, safety runs forward to cone to coaches left.  Coach raises ball to throw, safety puts on brakes and run to cone coach is looking at. Coach lowers ball back to run position in right hand, safety runs forward to cone to coach's right.  Coach raises arm, FS reverses to cone where coach is looking.  Repeat.
