Other opposing DL, instead of maintaining leverage, would take the free path into the O backfield because it would usu. take them to the ballcarrier vs. most offenses.  In this case they'd occasionally get lucky & intercept the ballcarrier's path, but more often they'd wind up accelerating past him.

Why do you say "more often?"  If that were the case, we wouldn't use the technique and would be stupid to do so.  If there's 4 defensive linemen getting penetration, all 4 would have to "accelerate past him" for the ball-carrier to avoid being sacked.  More over, bringing 7 to be blocked by 5 (or 6, if the RB stays in to block), also yields positive results.  We don't look at 7 on 5 as a 2-man advantage, or 6 on 5 as a 1-man advantage, because what happens in most cases is when an offense is outnumbered in a pressured attack situation, blockers either try to take on too many and not get anyone, or they can't decide who is the greatest threat and block no one as they're trying to decide.  So the advantage is really more than +1 or +2.  It ends up looking like +7.  And we start hearing, "Block somebody."

Lots and lots of good stuff...

And Dave said it, a defense will generally accommodate an offense, if the defensive coaches don't see what is going on...and I have seen it at all levels and all age groups...

DW - Over Nasty tags, we used those a lot in tandem...we found the DE would end up outside the TE with the Nasty Split...Power under him all day long with the bubble he created.

Power I - Unbalanced Line, DE widens...power under him, in one game, every time we called the unbalanced power, we scored...I couldn't convince the OC to keep calling it

Spread - 2x2, linebackers come out of the box to defend slot receivers, and if they keep the LBs in the box, fast screens to the slots or the ones
None of them suck, they just haven't found what the kid is good at yet.

There is a couple of different thoughts on how to defend unbalanced sets. The 2 most used are either to "New Center" or adjust with SS. Both depend on the defense being able to recognize an unbalanced set. Bad teams never adjust hence the problems.

There should be a new Thread about this. I used to be a "New Center" coach. Works great when you play a team that is 100% unbalanced. But teams that toggle are a problem. So now its adjust a SS for me from now on. Starting doing this the past few seasons because its easier.

We lost one game last Spring vs a team that played and 7 a man and an 8 man blocking surface and we were not adjusting properly because we were in new Center mode vs a team that we thought would be 100% unbalanced. At the half we adjusted to SS mode and it worked great but was too late.
What is beautiful, lives forever.

Bad teams never adjust hence the problems.

And some bad teams adjust constantly, looking for the magic bean.

Each have their advantages. If you are using the SS to adjust to most formations then it is easier. If you are a 1 high structure then New Center is easier.

I really believe like anything else it's all about having a plan.

Usu. what I see is 4 DL doing 4 different things.
