First Scrimmage in the books
« on: August 20, 2018, 03:55:48 PM »
Jamboree was this past weekend.  Was our first real taste of 11 vs 11.  Went in with 23 and 24 Quick(plus a keep tag for QB), 36 Power Toss, Mini 47 Speed, and Pass Right.  Had 2 full backs that I think will be really good full backs, bit of a FB controversy as to who to start. I went with the one that did better in Pinball to run with the 1s in the Jamboree.  He averaged 5 yards per carry on his first 2 quicks... also averaged 1 lost fumble per carry.  3rd play, takes a terrible path on his banana block on 36 Power Toss and pitch hits him... ok if my other FB shows a pulse at all... guess controversy over.  Aside from the fumbles, we moved the ball well.  I think whoever lined the field screw up, cause there was 2 sidelines on the left side, about 10 yards apart.  Had a 47 speed and a 23 Quick Keep that would have been touchdowns except my back turned up the wrong sideline and didn't get the corner.  Connected on a pass right to the wing back on one of the better pass plays I have ever had on my team, set up our first score on a 36 Power Toss.  Defense was an oddly aligned 44, any sweep would have been easy money, just didn't have one at the ready yet, but we were gaining consistent and good yardage.

2nd String (we only have 16 kids, so lot of overlap outside of the 4 back positions.) Run the same script (my script was just order of install, no tells for those prying eyes) first play 23 quick... other FB takes a bad angle... botched handoff.  Crap... who else can I try at FB.  Anyways... make the correction, remind them of their correct path.  Run it again.  Tough 5 yard run.  24 Quick. another tough 5 yard run.  36 Power Toss didn't do much, 3 back went to wide.  I can correct that, no big deal.  47 mini speed, OLB comes up hard but away from play like he is trying to get to edge before the WB.  WB stops on a dime, make a ridiculous cut upfield and see ya!  This was the scrimmage that our 23 quick keep would have gone for 6 but we cut up the first sideline, instead of the 2nd.  Overall this FB greatly outclassed the other one.  Still mistakes... but performed much better.  So I have my FB for week 1 unless he craps the bed at practice this week.

I really like this offense, we are still cutting our teeth here on it, but it is looking real nice, and as we get better at coaching the techniques, things will get much better.  Looking to add Left 34 Trap and 18 sweep this week.

On 24 Quick, does that mean you are not reversing out to hand it to the FB?

24 Quick is reverse open still.  33 quick would not be.

I thought Quick signified to Open to the side of the play? Like on 33 Quick, the QB opens to the left and on 23, the QB opens to the right?

From the 2017 book, the play art for both 23 and 24 quick uses a reverse pivot open.  33 Quick does not, the HB is closer to LOS so it hits too quick for a reverse open.

So what does the, "Quick" cue mean for your players. 23 is just 23. 24 is just 24. Both reverse pivot. Quick is a cue that tells the QB to *not* reverse pivot and open to the play.

3rd play, takes a terrible path on his banana block on 36 Power Toss and pitch hits him

Looking to add Left 34 Trap and 18 sweep this week.

36 power toss ? How are you running that. Power tells the WB to skip his track block and block the first defender in the hole called. 6 hole power is essentially a track block. Toss pulls the guard, leading through the 6 hole. And on 36 there is no banana block or pitch to the HB. It's a hand off. DC has a great explanation of 36 toss sweep in a thread somewhere. You need to check that out.

Are you running 38 power toss ? Going outside the TE ? WB cracking the DE ? This is a pitch to the HB. FB runs his 24 path just to the outside of the RT and looks for first ugly jersey. Not how everyone does it but that's what we do. QB pitches and leads looking for the corner.

Maybe that's the confusion... We just call it that I think.  Quick is not a tag.  The name of the play is 23 Quick, and 24 Quick.  We do not have a 23 and 24.  Just a 23 Quick and a 24 Quick.

So what I call 23 Quick is just 23.

Crapola... I just realized how much I am butchering this...  Ignore what I am calling the plays. I was hemming and hawing over a 36 and 38 play... and I seem to have confused the 2 I was looking at, cause I have a 38 Power Toss and a Left 36 Toss called that I printed out to my Play Book file.  And somehow I ended up with 36 Power Toss in my head and have been calling it that.

This is what I get for trying to do this stuff at work where I get distracted by my job.

Just trying to help you out ! Left 36 won't work ! Left tells the backfield to run base action left (23) and left guard to pull right.

36 Toss or 36 sweep or 36 toss sweep. All those work.

You are correct
During quick you open playside or hole side and skip the reverse pivot

So why can't you run a 36 toss where you actually toss it...More like DW with the WB leading thru 6 instead of going around and going to LB?
Maybe not for everyone but I am sure DW's put that play in for sure when switching to DCWT.  (pg 160 of 2017manual)
Also I have seen Left 36 Toss run as a toss as well...FB goes Left running 23 (can think of it as filling for Lg. Kind of Bucksweepish.
Good if LB's focusing on FB.
My 2 cents...lots of ways to run this O
