Is this a flag league? Serious question.
Not flag. Its full pads. Rules say we have to have at least 9 to start 8 to finish. Population around 500. if that. All the good kids went to play in surrounding towns. So there was no registration fee this year. Free football. Managed to round up 10 (7-8 yr olds). I bought some the equipment for them. Hey they just wanna play. Tough little guys. They look in their eyes when you bring them pads and cleats brings tear to the eyes. I think the good ones stayed.

What age group and what defense? NM... Saw that you posted 7>8yr olds. What offense are you going against?

DW

I hope you're joking here.  I do not envy you and your kids trying to stop the DW with 9.  It would be hard to defend a good DW team with 13.

Just try to make it fun for the kids and hopefully you have a couple of fast kids on offense who can score from anywhere.

Good luck to you, coach.

DW

So you're going to defend against the DW with no D-lineman and short two kids? Have you heard of a play called wedge?

Well, the bad news is that it's the DW. Most OC's on that level tend not to attack the 'A' gaps. A DW OC at that age level will make a living off of Wedge and Dives if you let him.  The good news is there is no such thing as an unstoppable offense.  The other good news is that the age bracket is 8u.  Wedge, Pwr, Sweep.  You'll get some Counters. But, that's okay.  Obviously, I don't know enough about your/their personnel to match talent and studs, your defense or, if you've scouted the opponent, etc...  8u's can have problems with hitting targets in space and with double-teams.  They're probably SAB, TKO blocking; possibly GOD.  Doubtful that they block GOL. But, hey... anything is possible.

 Generally speaking, if you have more speed than strength on your team, use less linemen and more LB's or Safety(s).  If you have more of the slow types, use more linemen.  If it's about even in speed & slow, use a 5-man front and 1.) Squeeze the shit out of their O-line to limit the Wedge's effectiveness as much as possible.  Most offenses at that age group want to run to their right.  Their best RB is probably their left wing or QB.  Make him bounce it out and make them use sweep to that side. 2.) Assign a DL to the off-tackle gap to their right. DE can be lined up in the 'C' gap or over the TE and attack the 'C' gap and  squeeze. DE can even be a MPP bear-crawler if he has no talent.  3.) Don't worry about your NT being a two-gapper.  That's hard for even HS NT's to do.  Personally, I'd keep changing him between head up on the C and moving him to either 'A' gap. i.e.. 1st down, 'A' gap to your defense's left.  2nd down; head up over the C. 3rd down; your defense's right 'A' gap.  Mix it up however you want.

That leaves you with 4 defenders to work with. I don't know how well you can defend Field/Boundary. So, I'll just make more general statements.  You'll have to give them off-tackle power.  But, give it to them to their left- or, boundary.  Regardless of the offense, OC's for 8u's tend to sweep to the Field and run off-tackle to boundary.  Our team actually has a bit of a tendency to do the exact opposite, at least, until the defense adjusts. We try to run our DW sweeps as tight as possible so, sweeping to the boundary doesn't bother us too much.  But, whatever...  4.) Put a LB over the offense's left 'C' gap at ~3yrds.  He's far enough off of the line to make it harder for the WB to hit him in space on sweeps.  But, he's close enough to attack Power & Counter without getting caught in the wash as easily.  5.) DE just outside of TE and squeezing. 6.) FS just outside of Right/Boundary LB at ~7yrds depth. Left/Field LB is an overhang.  Safety/CB is slightly wider than that at ~5yrds depth.  If your team is able to do so, you can even flip Boundary & Field defenders as necessary.

(Boundary)--->F...........................$<-------(Field)
(Boundary)----->B...................B<-----------(Field)
(Squeeze)---->E.....T....N..T..E<-------------(Squeeze)
.......................O.O.O.C.O.O.O
.....................W.........Q.........W
.................................F

Also, take a look at it from the OC's POV.

Any chance your opponents would loan you a few kids each week, so that you're poor kids aren't at such a disadvantage? I can't imagine them playing down 2 men and without being able to come off the field is a very safe situation for them. Is it just a bunch of exhibition games you're playing, or are you actually a member of a league?

Real league. We practice like a real game. No walking to your personal water bottles. I keep the squirt bottles near. Its fast paced. We played today on the hot turf. They didn't ask for water. We take it out there every chance of course. We lost.36-6. The parents and players were so happy we scored. Last year the 4 divisions didn't win any or score any. So that's a win to me.
