smashmouth - BLAST
« on: July 01, 2013, 12:01:01 PM »
Coach Calande-

I purchased your smashmouth book awhile back.  I see on page 29 you have a 34 blast and you recommend calling it to the uncovered lineman.

Am I reading this correctly?  You could run a 3X blast to any lineman that is uncovered?  is that what you're suggesting?  Just want to make sure I'm not inferring something that wasn't intended to be inferred.

You can.  That means the line will fan defenders away from that bubble and thats where the army leads the assault...

I really like it.  As simple as it all is, it opens up several plays off of knowing the fundamentals.  good stuff.  Thank you.

If you manage to stumble back onto this thread I do have a question regarding good/god.  I vaguely remember reading about your ditty for blocking scheme, if you're GOOD we'll run at you, every GOOD guy has GOD inside of him, something kingpin and FBI.

Does this apply to all plays?

The Commandments:

1) if we run at you, you must be GOOD.
2) Good people have GOD inside them
3) the good fella works for the king pin
4) the king pin always has an angle (gdb)
5) the fbi always follows the king pin.

Those work for all holes 0-7 for powers, counters, traps.

Ok so if we've got a 12 trap.  The play is running at our 2 man / PIT.  He's blocking GOOD.  To the inside of him is our PG(0/1) who is blocking GOD.  To the outside of our PIT is our kingpin blocking GDB and he's followed by our PE who is the FBI.

Just so that I understand:
wherever the play is going is GOOD
the next O-lineman INSIDE/towards the ball is GOD (typo initially)
the first O-lineman OUTSIDE of "GOOD"/where the play is going is kingpin GDB
any subsequent linemen outside of the kingpin are FBI.
If you show up for a fair fight, you are unprepared.

Coach Calande -

I know you're busy running a HS team, yet I do have a question for you.  Where does the SW fit into your overall system?  I've entertained the DW but I'm a big fan of direct snap and the speed in which it hits...also, with my level (or lack thereof) of proficiency as a coach, I expect that a DS is easier to coach than an under-center arrangement.

If you show up for a fair fight, you are unprepared.

we ran it for one game last year when our starting qb and his backup were both knocked out. All we had left was a soph kid whod never even started a jv game.....and the balanced line single wing.

we almost always install some type of direct snap package just for that reason.   this year, i expect to have 4 qbs on varsity/jv so will most likely not go that route.

balanced line single wing with double wing blocking is a breeze.   the blocking back takes the fbs assignments, the "fullback" in the single wing takes the qbs role and the tailback is just like a wing that has already motioned.

very easy to install-

sweep
power
tb counter
fb or tb blast
wedge fb or bb
wing counter
fb counter trap or bb counter trap
wing reverse
fake counter or fake reverse
and of course you can run buck series and spin series if you like.

BLAST was a GOD send for us when DE's starting squeezing down or just stood in place and refused to come upfield expecting power to be run right at them....

We went back and forth from POWER to BLAST and it killed DE's...... And my Wing and FB loved running shoulder to shoulder thru the hole killing everything in front of them....
