locating the read in Gibbs zone
« on: July 17, 2013, 08:59:40 AM »
So I have my pre season zone video playlist I'm re watching as pre season prep.

Last night I heard gibbs say:

"On wide zone the rb read the first man outside in ...never reading a 9"

Then he states

" rb reads second man from center"

Two questions

What happends when I see 0-3-5-9 who's the first read?

Does the nose or Zero shade count as one in the count from center.

RB's reads are described in my playsheets attached.  ALSO - the DOT on the "read" defender in the diagram is on ALL our playsheets.

BASICALLY IT IS THIS:

1.  OZ = read first DLM from outside-in (NOTE: 9 tech is a DE if he is DOWN & you read him - & a LBer if he is UP & you DON'T read him).

2.  IZ = read first DLM from inside-out (playside on Center - EXCLUDING a Shaded Nose).

The FOUR attachments should DEFINITELY answer your questions.  PHONE ME IF YOU NEED TO DISCUSS THIS (& I would be glad to give of my limited time):  804-740-4479 (between 10 AM & 6 PM/EASTERN

SEE ATTACHMENTS (FIRST = MY OZ;  SECOND = MY IZ;  THIRD = PLAYSHEET ON OZ FROM ALEX HIMSELF WITH RB INITIAL READ CIRCLED IN RED;  FOURTH = ONLY ARTICLE ALEX EVER WROTE ON THIS):

Look at the FIRST ATTACHMENT from Joe Gibbs' 2007 Playbook.  They ran the OZ the SAME as Alex Gibbs (with Portis at RB).  A Gibbs & Joe Bugel (both were at Ohio St with Woody) taught zone blocking the SAME.
Note the RB READ (indicated by DOT) vs. MANY fronts.  95% of the time the RB INITIAL READ ON OZ = DE in 3 pt. stance  (only exception was that "Bear" look)!!!

OUTSIDE ZONE (NORMALY:  FIRST DLM FROM OUTSIDE-IN = DE;  SECOND DLM FROM OUTSIDE-IN = DT):
RB:  LINE UP 7 ½ YARDS DEEP.  DROP STEP WITH OFFSIDE FOOT & RUN ON TRACK FOR YOUR LANDMARK - THE BUTT OF THE TE (OR WHERE THE TE WOULD BE) – PRESS THE HOLE.   READ HATS OF THE FIRST TWO MEN ON THE LOS COUNTING FROM OUTSIDE-IN (EXCLUDING Lbers).  IF THE OUTSIDE MAN COMES IN – YOU GO OUT.  IF THE OUTSIDE MAN GOES OUT – YOU GO IN & READ THE INSIDE MAN (RUN OFF HIM).  RB IS PERMITTED ONLY ONE CUT, AND LIVE WITH IT!  DETERMINE WHERE YOU WILL CUT BY YOUR THIRD STEP.

PS:  Shades are counted as "0" (see SECOND ATTACHMENT).  This is SO simple!!!
