Maybe I'm just slow

I cant for the life of me see the difference in how the linemen are taught to block IZ vs OZ, each diagram and breakdown I see looks the same but with the RB using different landmarks. Help out if you can lol thanks

I might be slower than you, but my understanding is IZ the OL drives defenders vertically. OZ the OL drives the defense horizontally. Hopefully someone who knows better than I will chime in.

Outside Zone - All OLM / TE play side zone block. All OLM / TE back side man block. If the Center is covered the BSOG is considered play side. If the Center is uncovered then play side and back side begin and end with him.

Inside Zone - All OLM / TE's zone block left or right per the called monument regardless.

That's it.

For me the RB keys first LB'r to the backside of his monument.

The zone "rotates" so that LB'r is typically the most difficult to block. So OZ its an ILB....IZ its an OLB.

Plus reading DLM keeps the RB's eyes near. I want them far. Worked MUCH better.

You still had the same landmarks? OG and TE?

This post is exactly why I have Zone & Stretch, I never say Inside Zone or Outside Zone. If the Zone play is designed to hit anywhere from frontside d gap to backside b gap why do I need to add anything. At the college level & the professional level I get the reason to have both.

I do, after years & years I have just simplified it. I still use many of the same concepts, but I have made it easy to do. The RB's now that I do differently as well. Rushing for over 4k yds in a HS season I know it works on grass. At the youth level my last season we scored 762 points in 16 games.

Coach Tricket(FSU O Line coach) comes through every year on the recruiting trail. His quote to me was so much of what guys say about Zone is BS, keeping it simple is the key.
