Yeah, I probably actually need more athleticism.

Never hurts.  ;)

The suttle diiference is steps and movement.

Iz is climb in two steps pushing doubles vertical

Oz is climb in three steps push double lateral.

In youth I dont differentiate. Learned that from Rich Kelly. I do have a pocket of calls that will create suttle changes.

"Push" get into combos and push dont get off doubles -iz

"numbers" i move centers monument over 1number creating a natural stretch with less doubles -oz

With most youth defenses playing wide DEs does it it even make sense to run OZ and not just go IZ and Truck? Or do you have your back turn up inside each time?

With a 9 air or wide 9
-------------50
---------3--------9
---#--0--0--0

1 we run wide zone to 3 tech
1 or 5 tech we run tight zone
see mountjoy red/white

Oz here the 9 is our pre snap (I say our because most teams teach this as a read in action or during the play).

Pre snap key is wide we know it will break inside the 9.

Base on pre snap we have 2 lanes C gap or A gap.

C is where we wanna go. If its plugged by the lb we cut behind the 3.

The 3 will be stretched ... now if theres a nose that lane will be small or cut behind the nose.

Practical knowledge we will get 3-6 if we take C and live with it.

We cut behind the three we get more big plays but also smaller gains. It the "haymaker". As long as we have no negatives im stable on the sideline.

Im no where near that old or that rich haha

My back is reading C gap essentially.

He see's 2 paths C gap ...A gap vs the front I showed.  The second path can be as drastic as backside B. If we have to dont like to.

Back on track.

C gap open- lets gets in it and out once you break the line get your john brown hind parts up field.

C gap closed  - cut back toward center find daylight.

One thing I didnt add and shouldve

Purists will read a 9 tech with his hand in the dirt as the first read. They will not read a..9 In a 2 pt up stance.

This is due to athleticism and match up

Ive never seen a 3 pt 9 tech coaching youth but I still wouldnt use him as a live action read

Just me

Now Im confused....are you inquiring about a 1 back formation? I thought you were running DCWT formation.

OZ vs a wide 9 is not that a good play without 2 backs...or a tight WB.

Belebuch

Coach Tricket(FSU O Line coach) comes through every year on the recruiting trail. His quote to me was so much of what guys say about Zone is BS, keeping it simple is the key.

Joe
Having read his book a few times, I find this quote VERY interesting.

Not surprising, but interesting yes.

I find that I follow more and more teams by who coaches there instead of who plays there and FSU is at the top of my list this year, Coach Tricket being the #1 reason.

Thanks for the perspective Coach Joe, and for the simple approach to Zone.

Luc
