zone blocking in youth... diary of install for 10/11s
« on: August 05, 2014, 01:52:39 PM »
Figured this may help folks

First practice was last night day one no pads (league rule)

20 minutes on stance -2 point
20 minutes on first step (left n right)-bird dog
- first coaching point aiming point talks to the upper body
- second coaching point our first step is a smal 2-6 in later step

First step the playside foot and are pointing at the target. Line of the bridge of the nose makes a line with the targer along with both shoulders and slight angle of the hip.

The opposite foot stays stationary facing forward

10 minutes of alignment
- maximum recession
- 2ft split

5 minutes introduce the count method
- showed a 6-4-0-4'-6 front with 20 tech lbs and counted.
- switched kids and counter again

Day 2 install

10 min review on stance
10 min review of first two steps
5 min introduction to covered/uncovered step
10 min of covered steps we labled power steps
10 min of uncovered steps we labled fly steps
5 min review on count
5 min review on covered and un covered steps vs a front ...uncovered must check playside down defensive lineman before climbing. If uncovered and the playside def lineman slants we pick him up and forms a double.
10 min on calls - over means center moves his declaration over. Stack call means backside partner takes the down lineman playside guy checks and climbs to backer.

15 min of pass pro covered and uncovered steps

Tomorrow we will get into footwork drills to help athleticism and introduce board for covered and un covered steps.

As a team we introduced tight and wide zone right using "gaps open or closed" a method I came up with to help teach zone. Still a work in progress but looks a lot better then last season at this time.

We will have 8 1hour sessions of oline before our scrimmage jamboree aug 17. By then the scheme is 100% installed and 66% of our run game is installed. The remainder is focus on fundamentals ...better technique and wxecution. Then we can game plan and start teaching situational game play.

Day 3 making progress

15 min of ladder work
-1 foot per hole
-2 per hole
- 3 per hole
5 min of stance
5min of first step
5 min of covered power steps
5 min of un covered
20 min of boards
- one board is angled left one board right...player starts inside on it...covered steps end up strattling the board with hands throw. The other you will open and cross over so both feet are on the out side and we are "flying" getting fast for pick up of lbs. We switched boards then changed what boards were what. 10 min of covered left uncovered right. 10 min of covered right and uncovered left.
-20 min of pass set. We are kick sliding if un covered in pass pro. We did kick slide on boards

Team vs air 15 minutes
I told each lineman if they were covered or not and they went full speed performing those steps. Vice versa with pass plays.

Eventually we will spend 5 min on everything.

The goal is
5 min ladder work
5 min on stance and first steps
5 min of covered/un covered on boards
5min of covered on sled
5 min of uncovered vs bag holders
5 min of 2 v 2

We will sub sled and bag work for slow oklahoma
we will also sub sled work for 2 board drill

Work in progress.

What's the gap open gap closed that you came up with?

I had my "ah ha" moment when I was reading one of the mountjoy outside zone attachments.

Basically we find the primary read in either zone play

Wide zone: read first defender on or inside the TE. Vs 9 dont bounce vs 6/7 possible bounce

-------m----------s
--------------3--------9
------#---0---0---0

Vs a 9 we know we dont bounce. Base on alignment I see 2 open gaps C and A (center). So I tell my runner to still aim and take steps to the aiming point but cram into C. If you see the C gap close you know where to go (next gap inside).
Thats basically it In A nut shell..I re watched a lot of minnesota zone and gibbs film seeing if my read system would co incide and it does about 95% .

Instead of being so fixated on men we are fixed on space ...cut into space
