Team Selling out to Stop the Wedge
« on: October 08, 2018, 04:31:20 AM »
Recently we dominated what most people felt was the best team in our league/divsion with Wedge.  We expect to face them again in a couple of weeks in the playoffs and we are pretty confident they are going to sell out trying to stop it.  I'm curious to hear what other coaches like to do when facing this?

If I had a team selling out to stop wedge I would keep running wedge. I would have a counter off of it for when/if they stopped it. Like wedge sweep or wedge pass depending how they were selling out.

I cut your apex. It doesn't always work, but it's better than watching your FB get 10 yards a crack. The last true wedge team we played had a "tell", so we weren't cutting him every single play. Just when they ran wedge. We rotated 4 kids at NT to take turns cutting the C. They then went to power with good success until we made a personnel change at MLB, then shut them down for keeps.

Before the miracle of google...i saw these

1. Nose crawling through centers legs (no lie.. he picked it up in the war room apparently)
2. Double A gap stone
3. Stack blitz with nose and mike
4. Some type of A gap bear crawl

“Sell out” how?  Teams try to stop Wedge in different ways.

Change the Wedge Point.

This was discussed many years back on this forum.  Can wedge on the Guard and Tackle, its not as direct but if they are taking out your Center, its going to be a surprise when you go behind the Tackle.

just spit balling.

Wedge 16 for when a coach really stresses about wedge and has everyone fly into the apex of the wedge once it's formed.

Also don't crowd the line of scrimmage with your OL, back them off as far as you can get away with. This makes it harder to cut your linemen
