Variations of trap
« on: November 19, 2018, 12:42:47 PM »
I was watching a T offense clinic online and the coach said that he had run 10 variations of trap. What could those variations be? Fold? Influence? move the man being trapped or folded? What are your thoughts?

What could those variations be?

My guess would be that it either had to do with formations (unbalanced, Nasty, etc.) or blocking assignments.

blocking assignments.

This is my guess.  Guard trap, tackle trap, etc.

Coaches sometimes overstate the obvious in a used car salesman like pitch for their specific scheme.

Trap with guard
A gap
B gap
A gap fold
B gap fold
A gap influence
B gap influence

Trap with tackle
C gap
C gap fold
C gap influence

Im at 9 with out trying lol see ;)

I'm thinking you're on the right track.

Some ideas:

1.  Short Trap (Trap 1st man past the G)
2.  Long Trap (when there's a DT in A gap)
3.  Fold (base with the PSG, fold the BSG off him)
4.  Wedge
5.  Base
6.  Influence

Maybe run it to different ball carriers and off different backfield actions, too (the base Buck Trap action and also Buck Sweep action) and use the Trap scheme going away from the action to block an inside counter like what a lot of Wishbone double dive teams do.
