Gibbs built off of what McNally was doing with Ickey Woods.

And McNally said once he saw the Browns doing something similar.

And Howard Mudd said last year that linemen were zoning parts of difficult looks back when he played.

The philosophy probably goes way back to the glory days of the SW in College.

Who knows?

But speaking in modern terms....its Shanahan and Gibbs. Probably because of their success.

I keep telling my grandkids I invented ice creme and they believe me...because when they come to visit they can eat ice creme for breakfast lunch and dinner.  ;D

This is probably the most down to earth conversation i have read in the past year regarding zone blocking.  Thanks.

Mike, what was the secret that Bill shared with you? IYDMMA.

It's roots go back to the early T teams, however I believe that Lombardi's "Doo Dad" blocking scheme was the ground upon which modern zone blocking concepts are built

Zone was created to handle slanting defenses

Matt

Welcome!

Your thoughts and insights will be well received on this forum. Its a great group that will discuss whatever without the flaming. We all appreciate each other’s plights I suppose.

I did get your email. Im revising a few items so that it makes more sense. A few discoveries that were still in my head. I will call you as well. Another week should do it.

Bill taught me that the monuments need to change per the bubbles in the defense and that I need to teach good jump cuts....in a nutshell. That will be included in my packet.

Rich

OK...Im changing the name to DOO DAD blocking. I think the kids will appreciate that over ZONE.

Now maybe they wont "zone" out on me while Im teaching.  ;D

Sorry to hear about your player. Always tough to outlive the young. Not fair.

If you get a chance to hear Jim McNally speak I highly recommend it.  Nuts and bolts guy and "tells it like it is".

I am not trying to complicate things.  But defenses line up in the craziest places sometimes.

I have heard "take what the defense gives you".  But i sometimes have a hard time during the game at the seeing what they are giving me.  They example below may be one of those cases where another play should be called, ie power / counter for some, QB iso or speed option for others.

.......But IZ Right is the call.  Who'd block Who?

My guess:
C = 3
G / T = Combo 4 to 7
Y = 5
t / g = Combo 2 to 6

...............................................f.....................
.......................................................................
.................................6.........7...........................
.....v..........v........1.....2....3..4....5...............v
.....z.......................t..g..C..G..T..Y........
...............s.....................................................x..
...............................t....q...................................

My issue is covered / uncovered didn't lead me to this conclusion.  I had to number defenders.  Bill and others who count, dont take this personal.  I am going thru an exercise trying not to count.

...............................................f.....................
.......................................................................
.................................2.........2...........................
.....v..........v........3.....1....0..1....3...............v
.....z.......................t..g..C..G..T..Y........
...............s.....................................................x..
...............................t....q...................................

Thanks for the help guys!!!

As I look at this IZ is a bad call here.

However, your not going to get the weakside combo you seek.

PSG & T on 1 to 2
C on 0
WSG cut on 1
WST Climb to 2

Thats my read and you should be going to the G/T for the best results.

Thats my take.

You need to become familiar with the Red/White principle Bill always talked about  (Reduced/Wide).

We only run certain plays at different looks, for example we only run IZ to the White side, it' not as good to a reduced front.

Try filling out the attached worksheet so I can see how you guys think , then I'll give my explanation

Also pick this up

DVD explaining WHY YOU NEED TO NUMBER DEFENDERS ON ZONE BLOCKING.  This can be taught to ANY age lever that can count to 3.

Here's more Per Coach Mpuntjoy

REMEMBER - it is NOTHING for certain players to switch from zone to man within a particular play.

What many people do NOT understand is that not EVERYBODY on a zone play zone blocks!!! Zone blocks occur from bubbles (uncovered men) out towards the playside on every play. For example - when we run a zone play vs. a PRO 4-3 - only TWO men zone block, & EVERYBODY else mans.

--------------------- ----0
---------------3-2--1-----1--2-3
---------------H-O-O-C-O-O-Y

No matter if you run inside zone, or outside zone - right OR left - ONLY the C & Playside G zone (there is only ONE uncovered O-Lineman & you zone from HIM to the playside).

If you look at the Attachment (SHOWING ZONE COMBOS ON THE IZ) you will notice that anyone NOT in the "circle" MAN blocks (drive block on IZ; reach block on OZ).

Until a coach understands THIS - he doesn't fully understand ZONE BLOCKING. Our DEFINITION of zone blocking = "ZONE BLOCKING IS TWO ADJACENT OFFENSIVE LINEMEN RESPONSIBLE FOR BLOCKING TWO DEFENDERS IN A CERTAIN AREA." It BEGINS at the bubble. The more bubbles - the more zone blocks on a given play (the fewer the bubbles - the fewer the zone blocks on a given play). WE normally get from ONE to THREE zone combos on a zone play - STRICTLY depending on the defensive alignment.

Sorry about the format.  Here is how i think the first sheet would play out.

Backside = full zone

Playside =
covered - base,
uncovered - combo play side - say your play side teammates name and combo with him to backer (Kevin Burns method of communication)

1)
...................m...................
...v..b.....v....n....v......b..v...
.....y...t...g...C...G...T...Y.....

y - b
t - v
g/C - n to m  (unsure about this one - I would like the combo on n)
G - base v
T - base b
Y - base v

2)
.....b1.....b2.......b3.....b4......
.....v.......v.........v.......v......
.....y...t...g...C...G...T...Y.....

y - sift to b1
t / g - combo v to b2
C/G - combo v to b3
T/Y - combo v to b4

3)
....................m........b......s
....b...v........v.....v.......v....
.....y...t...g...C...G...T...Y.....

y/t - combo v to fs
g/C - combo v to m
G - base v
T/Y - combo to v to b

4)
..........b.......m.......b..........
....b....v.......n........v.....b...
.....y...t...g...C...G...T...Y.....

y/t - combo v to b
g/C - combo n to m
G/T - combo v to b
Y - base b

5)
...s........b............b............
....v........v.....v........v...b...
.....y...t...g...C...G...T...Y.....

y - sift to s
t/g - v to b
C - base v
G - base b (i would like to combo with the C though?  Not really zone though)
T - base v
Y - base b

6)
...................m
...1..2..3...4...5...6...7...8..
.....y...t...g...C...G...T...Y.....

y - 2
t - 3
g - 4
C - 5
G - 6
T - 7
Y - 8
