Zone Blocking
« on: June 03, 2010, 03:18:45 PM »
Just curious how many of you guys are using a zone blocking scheme?  I know people say it is easy to run some I am considering running it this year with my pistol/jet offense.

There is a whole thread devoted to zone blocking on Dum Coach site.  Check out the DETAILS!

I know coach I was just trying to see who actually runs it, not how to run it.

I do!

You will probably find more people on the other thread that actually run it.

zone blocking is great creates a lot of havoc for a defensive secondary mainly the Lbs and a walked up safety.  It takes quite a bit of time to get it right but most good blocking schemes do.  Be patient and whether the storm of frustration.

I guess my next question is do I need to run inside and outside zone?

If you commit to zone blocking - you need BOTH!

It would certainly make my life easier if I could do both...probably wont get back to trying IZ for years though. Not running zone this year and next year start with my 7 year old grand sons team.

In the past I have run OZ for C gap...trap for B gap and wedge for a gap. Thats a lot of teaching.

The thinking for having both is this:

1.  IZ better vs. bubble over ON G.  OZ better vs. bubble over ON T
2.  IZ better vs. teams that hit/read/slide laterally.  OZ better vs. DLM that come straight ahead &/or penetrate.
3.  IZ usually an B TO A gap play.  OZ usually a D TO C gap play.  With BOTH - you can challenge them on a "broader front".

Now while these are GENERALIZATIONS - they hold true for us.  I just finished studying all of Alabama's 2009 games on intercut Coaches' tape.  They really major in IZ & OZ!

Having BOTH actually cuts down on teaching because - the blocking ASSIGNMENTS are IDENTICAL, only the  TECHNIQUE differs SLIGHTLY (slightly wider AIMING POINTS for blockers).  You don't really need other type plays (traps, wedges, etc.).

PS:  Without ADDING anything else - Bama COUNTERS by calling a pre-determined cutback off IZ blocking on the highly effective "WHEEL" play, which I will attach.  Great MISDIRECTION play:
