Ball Placement in the Kicking Game
« on: April 28, 2012, 05:55:43 PM »
Now, maybe I need to pay better attention to the kicking game.

Where is the ball placed on a kick off? Understand, I am asking this because a college playbook I am looking in has every kick off originating from the middle of the field. In a Cincinatti Bengals '98-'99 playbook, some kick off coverages have a designation of "ball on the left hash."

Any input on this would be halpful, thanks.

You mean as to what's allowed?  For a long time the rule in the major codes has been that the kicking team has its choice of spot anywhere between the hash marks on the line of the kickoff.

For a brief period in NCAA rules the kickoff had been allowed anywhere on the line from sideline to sideline, but that was a long time ago and was probably the result of an oversight -- that they hadn't considered teams would kick off from the side zones, until they saw that they did.  Previous to that, it had been from a spot centered between the sidelines.  Fields continued to be marked with an "X" at that spot for a long time afterward.

Lets put it this way.  I dont kick deep and I definitely make sure I pin them on the sideline if at all possible.

As far as what hash or the middle thats all preference.  I would hash it if I planned to onside kick.   ;)
Not MPP... ONE TASK!  Teach them!  :)
