Derek Wade Pistol

Has anybody used the Derek Wade pistol? In particular at the middle school level. It looks basic and could be perhaps a good starting point.

Have a look at Derek's blog post on his playbook before you make any decisions...

Derek Wade made the playbook to experiment with it. When he came on my show he mentioned that he hadn't ran it and it was a theory based playbook. He also asked me not to mentioned it but we talked about it anyway during his interview.  ;D

I think he hates he ever did that playbook from what I have heard.

He hates getting questions about something he has never run.

Coach, what are you looking for in Pistol ?What kind of blocking scheme are you thinking of for 12 and under. Many formations you can use all with the same core plays and blocking stays the same.

I'd like to look at (for next year) running 2x2 and 3x1 Pistol with about 10 to 12 solid/balanced running plays, using both zone and gap blocking. For Zone..IZ, OZ, Stretch, sweep or toss, and a good counter and reverse. For Gap...using a Wing Back or motioning Slot Back to Trap (DT), power (Kickout DE), Jet Sweep and again a good counter and reverse. I'd like to not use a pulling G or T. Once that's in, a Speed option. I'd otherwise like to avoid a QB Reading. Then as far as passing: screens, quick, and sprint out/boot play action. I feel that if Zone is not working then perhaps gap plays will.

I saw a VERY interesting site where the Coach uses Zone Blocking for BOTH Zone and Gap Plays. For the Gap runs he Zones AWAY from playside. When you draw it up, it works, just have the G double team inside or go to the BSLB on Traps and have the T double team or go to the BSLB on Power. So Zone Blocking with minor adjustments is all you have to teach for run plays. Since your blocking style is limited..rep, rep, rep. I believe the Coach uses this site.

One more thing...

I believe I also saw on this site...One Coach teaches only 1 Zone block for IZ, OZ, and Stretch; rather than differing aiming points and reaching. He IZ blocks and has his RB read the B Gap prior to the snap. If B is occupied, he presses the B Gap with an eye to cut to the A or C. If the B Gap is open, its haul ass to get there. This again would simplify the OL blocking..IZ instead of IZ, OZ, and reaching. The only negative that I see is pressing the B Gap might limit the ability to cutback to the BS A Gap.

Perhaps all this is OVER simplifying, but our middle school has only 10 days of practice before the first game.

Just click on the sticky I have in this section and check out the ppts and the coaches systems. If you find one you like let me know and I can connect them with you.
