season wrap up
« on: November 02, 2014, 10:12:05 PM »
We went 5-5 this season...debatably in a division higher then we shouldve been... went 1-4 to start...5-1 to finish. We had an oline that got better week to week and so did we as coaches in the system.

We started the season with :

Formations
- unit (ace)
- H off (we called easy)
- indian (h and y on same side)

Plays
tight zone
wide zone
Wr screen
5 passing plays using mahonz up/ down
p/a pass (waggle style)

We finished with:
formations
-unit
- trey (h and y on same side , H ad a wing)
- dueces (unit with both wr same side)
- batman/robin (trey + duece same side)
-heavy (h and y same side on the line)
- dot (h in fb spot in I formation)

Plays
wide zone
tight zone
Fb zone dive
truck
power (dw toss) *
slant
Seam
p/a pass

What I learned:
1 back can be tough vs an 8+man box which was  100% of the defenses we played. We started having success with over load formations to accomodate. We went true man blocking with exception of center and backside guard. We started the season with 6 man pass pro and ended with 7/8 man pass pro. Wide zone was our key play, with a fb is great for 8 man boxes. You dont need many pass plays...you need a few high percentage passes and a good p/a pass mixed in with good playcalling. * you need truck in the system...with out it your leaving big play oppurtunity and it really helps to calm down blitzes inside the tight ends (lil prob we had early).

O line wise we finished the season with
sled drills
slow oklahoma
2 boards
chute drills

We got out of 2 point stances and went to three after rich kelly critiqued some game film. The 3 point helped gain more push and forced us to be more violent in our blocks.

Overall this is going to be my offense until I die.

Im gonna get some video together after I chart all the plays on hudl so lurkers can get am idea of how it looks with 10/11

Curious.  Did you ever consider jetting or orbiting your H every down?

Not once... we do have ghost reverse action with our wrs but thats not ran very much.

We did swap H and R and ran truck (rocket toss) I didnt like it...but that was about when we started getting good at running truck.

I hate jet

Cool.

The reason I asked is my experiences running a one back O was I felt that some misdirection was missing...like motions.

YET...I dont think we have motioned in years so I was just curious.

We had enough formations and looks to keep them busy defensivley. Our "counters" were in our "pass game".

I found the same. Joe ran a Wing Counter from one back and we've gone to a similar design (we're in pistol) as the season has progressed.

Well executed counters / traps to players other than the featured back are deadly in youth ball no matter what the offense. We just have to get better at executing our counter and esp trap game - not nearly as crisp as it should be. We will need it down the stretch.

We also had good success with the wing counter, even when our zone and power were not working.  With a very fast wing, the play would often score the first time run and then hit for 20+ yes after.  We would run it 4-5 times per game.

The craziest play to me was our TB counter.  We were primarily right handed, running zone left maybe twice per game.  We could still have the QB open left and the TB start left then come back under a counter block from the G and pick up no less than 6 yds.  This on a poorly coached offense (didn't really know what I was doing).  Though we basically never ran left, kid LB's just couldn't help themselves.

Sounds about right, lol. I ran jet sweep with my 6U flag team. It didn't look too bad considering how late in the season we installed it.

Zach

Who did you run your double wing toss to? Did you pull both guard and tackle?
