I've punted as early as age 8.  It depends on whether my QB can do it since we don't change personnel or formations to punt.  The most we've ever punted in one season was around 15.  Some seasons not at all.  We will only do it if we can mange to be fairly competent with minimal expenditure of practice time.  Some years we can, some we can't.

I think you need to be abel to punt against teams that are your equal.  We've won several games that were defensive struggles simply because punting lets us win the field position battle.  We rugby punt out of one of our base formations.  When teams don't put anyone back we can easily get a 40+ punt without much practice.   Even if they put some one back the fact that the Rugby kick tends to roll minimizes the number of returns.

And because we roll out to punt there is very little chance of a block.  The QB/Punter is instructed to run or throw if there is any pressure in his face.  When both teams are struggling to get first downs, the punt is the edge that can make the difference.

One of our most memorable wins was a 6-0 game in which we got only two first downs.  But because we could punt we pinned our opponent in their end and took possession inside their 5 with time expiring on the game winning "drive".

That must be part of our problem ... we just dont run into teams that can stop us from getting first downs and yet they arent good enough to score on us ... if they can stop us, we are probably behind already or about to be ... we move the ball on almost everyone ... we move the ball even in games we lose ... even against teams with loads more talent we can move the ball most of the game ... so teams with equal talent really dont put us into punting situations ... sure maybe a few fourth downs here or there ... but they would be fourth and short ... like 1 or 2 ... and we would go for that whether we knew how to punt or not ...

Perhaps instead of discussing whether or not your team should punt ... we should discuss how to ensure success on fourth down ??

JUST RUN TOSS STUPID ... that's a direct quote from the bottom of my playcard ... lol

I really do understand your point about field position being important in a close game ... I just feel possessions are more important in any type of game ... we strive to possess the ball on every down of every game ... its not impossible for the badguys to score when we have the ball but it is pretty damn close ... 8-)

If you've gotten to 4th down, it's pretty clear you can't ensure success, unless you were just toying with the other 3 downs.

But by that standard, you probably can't ensure a successful punt, either, so maybe working to make fourth down successful is still a better use of your resources.

I once had an opposing coach in fourth down seven times in a single game, ranging from fourth and 4 to fourth and 7.  He went for it every time.

And he picked up the first all seven times.

That is what's known as defensive frustration.

Didn't LSU do something close to that to Florida a few years ago?

...and we lost a Conference Chapionship game by 30 points due to our inability to punt.

Pure offensive frustration.  ;)

And I'm not dating Jennifer Aniston because she thinks this board would cut into our together time.

No, not by that standard.  By that standard, you can't ensure a successful punt if your last few have been botched.

If you're getting 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, and 3, then OK.  If you've been getting 3 +/- 2.5, then no.

Yes, it's like playing dice football with 1 die.  Your avg. gain per down is 3.5 yds. and 4th & 1 is automatic.  But it's not easy to string together many 1st downs.

Wrong.  Do the math on that example.
