Here is what I figure to do this year.

If we are inside our own 10 and we have more than 1 yards to go we will punt.
If we are inside our own 25 to 10 with MORE than 5 yards we will punt.
If we are inside our own 35 to 25 with more than 10 yards we will punt.
Other than those scenarios we won't punt.
Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.

I had a 7 year old punter last year. the rules didn't allow it in league play put we had great success in scrimmages with it. We'll be doing it at the 8 y/o level this season. I am very excited to see how much success we have from it.

In my opinion, if you have to punt that is already showing a lack of success. Get first downs is what is important. Control your field position through first downs! Did I mention first downs?

Yeah, that sort of seems to me like saying, "I got new car insurance.  I can't wait to see how well they handle my claim if I total my car."

In our championship game, we fumbled on the opponents 1, they had 4th and 10 at the one and punted it to the 35 yrd line out of bounds. It was a free punt but they are only 8. We lost that game in OT.
The greatest accomplishment is not in never failing, but in rising again after you fail.

Going back to the original question, I don't see a particular age you have to start punting. I think as high school coaches become less conservative you will see far less punting. I only coach my kids in junior football now, but when I was a head high school coach we almost never punted, and when we did it was from shotgun in offensive formation as a suprise.

Heh...I can recall Riverdale Country School's varsity punting from regular long punt formation on 3rd down to Horace Mann (where I was a student).  Well, it was 3rd & 35.

Heck, I can remember the L.A. Rams under Prothro using long punt formation 4 times in a game on 3rd down, and punting 3 of those times.  Same era.  Gabriel had a bum wrist.

or from the other side of the page, "I'm not gonna buy insurance because the object is to not crash anyway."

We try to only punt of we are short of our own 30. Because evidently we couldnt move the ball anyway. So any positive yards and let the defense help out the offense. Then maybe have better starting field position.

That's not funny.  I live in Chicago.  That's pretty much how it works for about half the drivers here, it seems.
