Game 1 results - 1 year UBSW coach
« on: September 06, 2017, 12:34:34 PM »
Our team rocked and rolled.

Played a quality upper mid-level opponent.  Won 26-0

14-0 at halftime, scored on first drive of second half, and then called off dogs and liberally substituted.  Was able to pass towards or call a running play for 11 out of 14 eligible players (2 stripes weren't eligible).

Our team is a Division 2 team or B level.  We are fortunate to have 12 returning players from last year.  Out of 17 players, only 1 I would consider an MPP.

Total yards - 295 to 7.  They had a 15 yd completion on the 2nd play of the game, but that was it.  1 first down given up.

3 different boys scored TD's, and a 4th scored the 2 XP's.  Boys seemed to really enjoy the new offense and they are soaking up plays and executing very well.

Lots of things to clean up.  Mistakes in the game that we don't see in practice.  1B's not committing to 6 hole and bouncing outside.  Can see on tape the hole opened wide if they would have run at it.  Hard to simulate in practice what it looks like live and how late it opens.  BB going wrong way on some reverse calls, not lining up in nasty split.  normal issues and very fixable.  It was a lot of fun.

We run the sainted 6 from the UBSW base.  We also have Spread Jet plays in and also the base plays from the spread set.  Spread was very easy to put in with this group as that is what we ran last year so not much of a learning curve.

Lot of fun and looking forward to the season.

Nice job. Look at chaser drill to get the back to hit the 6 hole. Make sure you have the tags installed. I see a bunch of guys who want to install a new series before they install the base tags. Congrats.

We have Nasty, Nasty/Tunnel, Omaha, No, and Under.  no and under are player judgement calls based on the defense (both players are 6th year players at 11U).

We've done chaser drills.  As I said below, this in particular is a mistake in game that we don't see in practice.  In practice, they'll run right into the hole.  in the game though, wanted to bounce outside.  Encouragingly, most of these didn't go for huge gains.  The big gains were 18 sweep as we blocked to get them outside.  The 16's they bounced were smaller gains (thankfully).  If they would have broken big plays on 16 by bouncing outside, I'd have a tougher road to hoe.

We were generally faster than they were so it was the boys wanting to use speed rather than following the scheme.  Last couple years we didn't have great designed plays in my mind.  Our blocking scheme was a wedge.  Having a scheme with a kickout block/GOD blocking and seeing holes open up....this is new and having to undo some bad habits.

Explain to them that not running to the whole leads to you correcting it not letting them touch the ball. You better have a plan B if those words come out of your mouth because you can't not follow through.

Agree. We are fortunate to have three 1B's. One of them probably the best rb in the league and the most experience running as this is his sixth year and the more free spirited wanting to do his own thing. He got benched twice for it.

Hopefully start to see hitting the hole hard in games. It's a constant message now.
