Apply for Varsity HC?
« on: May 31, 2018, 11:35:01 AM »
Talking girls basketball here...

Just found out last night that our girls varsity HC is leaving.  I've been coaching at the middle school for 3 years and in the travel program for 5 years.  Worked with her a ton on what she wanted players coming up to high school to be able to do.  She started two freshman last year and this next years crop of freshman might have as many as 5-6 girls see big time varsity minutes.  Disclaimer: it's my daughter's grade and I have coached them since 4th grade.  The program is back to back conference champions.  This year they made the round of 32 in the state playoffs and the year before they were in the sweet 16.  Our 7th and 8th grade teams this year both went undefeated and won the conference championships. I coached both of those groups in travel.

I had a couple people lightly suggest that I throw my name into the ring for consideration for the varsity spot.  I'm conflicted.  I've always felt that some day I would want to coach at the high school level to gain that experience and see what that world is like.  She offered me a spot last year to assist her and I told her I was hesitant because of my daughter being in the program and how others would view that.  I know it's not an issue because I've stayed involved in our travel program for 3 years since she left it.  I'm actually the director of our girls travel hoops program.  But I know how small town talk can get carried away.  And she's going to be a freshman in contention for varsity playing time.  Outside of that, I know the town, the players, the people. And I've been running my own AAU program for over 3 years now, so from a management perspective I've got experience in the basketball world running a program, working with coaches "below" me, etc.

Would the "cons" be enough to keep you away from applying for this spot?  In my opinion, the cons are mostly due to small town politics. (or the fear of them!)

Fear of them?  Then the job probably isn't for you.

I guess fear isn't the proper term.  I know why I'm doing it and most other people know me and would know where my heart is.  But having a kid coming up through the system will make some people rather resistant to my getting the position or even applying for the spot. (We're talking school board members with their own kids in the program).  I can live with that because I know I'm doing it for the right reasons. But sometimes it does get a little annoying. That's all.

I had a talk with another coaching colleague last night who is about 40 years my senior.  He's been there done that.  He thinks I should entertain this a little more also.  So we'll see.  I have two weeks to get my resume and everything in.

Question: what other materials should I have ready in the case of landing an interview?

Go for it. These opportunities don't come up that often.  I wouldn't give the Daddy-ball thing a second thought, you know what it's all about.

--Dunno.  What materials do you plan to bring?

Just tell them you plan to treat your daughter like a second class citizen to show everyone you're not playing favorites, while simultaneously playing her as the starting point guard. That's how most HS Football Coaches seem to treat this situation.  ;D

I was thinking of having some sort of outline documenting the major points of how I would run a program.  Sort of a vision/mission statement deal. Offseason activities, my ideals and what not.

It's a tricky situation.  I was just talking to someone this weekend who knows the situation. Their view was my daughter would be one that definitely deserves a crack at the varsity lineup with little to no time spent splitting with the junior varsity.  She's certainly not the best player and won't be by a long shot.  But her combination of size, skills and athleticism are a very nice combo and as she adds a bit more muscle and experience at the varsity level she should become a pretty solid player by the time her 4 years here are done.  I've probably done her a disservice in the past by being a little harder on her than the others.

Resume and letter sent.  I do know that a very qualified guy has also put his name in and he was actually who I initially said I hoped got the job when I found out it was open. So we'll see.

I have at least made it into the interview process. I interview tomorrow. Over a dozen applicants and they are interviewing 6-8 of us for round 1. Then planning to break that down to 2-3 for the final round.

Word is that a guy that is top 20 in our state in all-time wins has also applied. He's coming off a state title two years ago but then was not retained for unknown reasons.  He was the coach at my high school when I was there. I'm guessing there were "recruitment" issues.  But the fact that he is interested in this job tells me he thinks there's the potential to win and win a lot with the talent here.

Any suggestions on follow up questions to ask the AD if given the chance?

I have a few thoughts in mind but I'm interested to hear the various considerations on this board.

Never interviewed for a coaching job but my go to is asking what is your ideal candidate and what is it that you are not looking for in a candidate.

Who hires your staff?

Will you have access to your players' grades/report cards?
