I posted this on here a few years ago.  Just reread it now.  It resonates even more for me now, after the last few years I had coaching.

Fast kid right and fast kid left is a better strategy than we give it credit for.  Obviously that shouldn't replace fundamentals, but running the fastest kid in the league off tackle every snap because "that's what we do" is pretty stupid.

Not scouting other teams may not be as big of a deal as it seems.  Of course, in his example the other coach had stats, which we rarely do.  So SOME scouting may be in order.  I think I overdid it.  And what he said about Sacred Heart was dead on.  That's exactly how the games - and seasons - went.  But the slow start to every season was usually more about getting kids academically eligible so he never knew exactly what he had until January rolled around.  They weren't Rhodes Scholars going there.

Understanding root cause and that you can fix it multiple ways.  Improving your offense my solve a defensive problem.  And likewise.  See the bigger picture to understand how things connect.

For context, this is my old college coach, I played in that league he references, and against those coaches he referenced.  PJ Carlesimo coached in our league before I got there.  I played against teams Stan Van Gundy coached.  Lit em up.   :)  I played against one of those two national championship teams that came out of our league, and another that went to the title game but lost.

And he's right, he was too young.  Heh.

Outstanding
However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.
