Remember the first interview you did with me? We talked about how Zone was where I always started, but not every year did I have a great Zone back. Coaches always need to adjust to what their teams can actually do.

Of course
However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.

What did yours look like?

It failed miserably- with 2 different teams- it isnt worth anyone trying
As part of our Dart Series- UBSW
QB stepping right
Shovel to BB going left
We trap blocked it

I saw Penn State dominate Washington Last night
Penn State ran the Shovel 3-4 times
Every time even with SB at the back position- looked like an accident waiting to happen on black ice with a 14 year old driver. Almost had one intercepted= never made much with it

It's great as a complimentary play, if it has something to compliment. We never ran it at Youth either for that reason.

The secret to shovel is speed option.

We ran it off a Speed Option variation. We blocked Power & ran a reverse Power Read with Speed Option look.

My favorite play to run is out of a pistol look.

I run a shovel option to the slot man.  The opposite slot runs a bubble play side.  With the back keeping proper distance to run a pitch if needed.

I have had a lot of success with this play.
