Running Back Alignment Tags
« on: June 10, 2018, 08:47:31 PM »
I would like to base out of single back pistol.  Then use tags to position the RB and H.  What are some ways you do this?  I'm trying not to get too wordy.

After reading a few articles, I'm thinking about something like this

Running Back Alignment Tags (L, R, or P)
.............L........................T..G..C..g..t.................................R..........
.....................S..................................H.........................................
........................................L....Q....R.....................................
..............................................P..........................................

H Back Alignment Tag  (Left side = odd numbers)
.............L........................T..G..C..g..t.................................R..........
.....................S............................0...4.......6..............8.......................
..............................................Q.....2..........................................
..............................................T.....................................................

Play #1 is QB Counter Left    "Queen L4 - 15 Counter"

.............L........................T..G..C..g..t.................................R..........
.....................S..................................H.........................................
.........................................T...Q...................................................

Play #2 is QB ISO   "Jack R6 - 14 ISO"

.............L.........................t..g..C..G..T.................................R..........
....................................................................H......S........................
..............................................Q....T...............................................

Play #3 is Power Left  "King R3 - 25 Power"

.............L.........................t..g..C..G..T.................................R..........
...................................S.........................................................
..........................................H...Q...T................................................
..................................................................................................

Thoughts?

Thanks

Matt

M....hope all is well old friend.

You are dangerously close to the Joe Gibbs numbering system I have been using for years.  You can also tag all motions using that system.

Its a long post so I will post after work tomorrow and help you plug it in per your formations and see what you think. Its pretty genius what you can do with it.

In the mean time

also use the search feature too include the quotes.....more threads will pop up.

Matt

So the first thing you do is set your formation.....Right or Left.

I always use at least S and H for that. Then they are the only two changing sides long distance if you no huddle. X and Y always align on the same side but you can add them to the Left Right equation if you want.

So for the sake of this exercise

RIGHT

.............X........................T..G..C..g..t.................................Y..........
.....................S..................................H.........................................
..............................................Q...........................................
..........................................................................................

H sets the formation and S aligns opposite.

LEFT

.............X........................T..G..C..g..t.................................Y..........
.....................H..................................S.........................................
..............................................Q...........................................
..........................................................................................

H sets the formation and S aligns opposite.

Now number your formation from left to right like reading a book.

.............X........................T..G..C..g..t.................................Y..........
.....................H..................................S.........................................
.............1......2............3......4..Q..6......7...................8........9........
..............................................5..........................................

Your Left slot can be closer to X while your Right slot can be a tight WB. Your spacing is how ever you want it but each number represents that spacing.

Now this numbering system tells T where to align to finish the formation. We use two digits. The first one tells T where to align and the second one is for motions if you want one.

So 44 would be align at 4 stay at 4. 41 would be align at 4 and on cue motion to 1.

Now your formation is this

44 LEFT

.............X........................T..G..C..g..t.................................Y..........
.....................H..................................S.........................................
.............1......2............3......T..Q..6......7....................8.......9........
...............................................5..........................................

T aligns at 4 and stays at 4. Then you add on your Playcall...15 Counter or 14 Iso or 25 Power.

66 LEFT

.............X........................T..G..C..g..t.................................Y..........
.....................H..................................S.........................................
.............1......2.............3......4..Q..T......7...................8.......9.......
...............................................5..........................................

T aligns at 6 and stays at 6.

55 RIGHT

.............X........................T..G..C..g..t.................................Y..........
.....................S..................................H.........................................
.............1......2............3......4..Q..6......7...................8........9........
..............................................T..........................................

T aligns at 5 and stays at 5.

Now its established the T, H and S are setting the formation but what about this Jack, Queen, King thing. Simple. Tag them the same as you already are doing with T.

66 RIGHT /  S88

.............X........................T..G..C..g..t.................................Y..........
.........................................................H.....................S.................
.............1......2.............3......4..Q..T......7...................8.......9.......
...............................................5..........................................

T aligns at 6 and stays at 6 while S aligns at 8 and stays at 8.

Or you can motion S to 8 by tagging him 28....S aligns at 2 and on cue motions to 8.

Want to go Heavy backfield

55 RIGHT / S44 / H66

.............X........................T..G..C..g..t.................................Y..........
................................................................................................
.............1......2............3......S..Q..H......7...................8........9........
..............................................T..........................................

Want to play mind games with the coverage on a run play

55 RIGHT / X 88

.......................................T..G..C..g..t.......................X........Y..........
.....................S..................................H.........................................
.............1......2............3......4..Q..6......7...................8........9........
..............................................T..........................................

Want a Pro formation for more power add in Lee and Roy.... Lover and Rover....Leroy

Lee is left side SE slide to TE....Roy is right side SE slide to TE

Lover is left side SE play OVER as the right side TE...Rover is the Right side SE play OVER as the Left side TE.

Leroy is double TE's

55 RIGHT / Leroy

...................................X..T..G..C..g..t..Y........................................
.....................S..................................H.........................................
.............1......2............3......4..Q..6......7...................8........9........
..............................................T..........................................

55 RIGHT / Lover

.......................................T..G..C..g..t..X.............................Y...........
.....................S..................................H.........................................
.............1......2............3......4..Q..6......7...................8........9........
..............................................T..........................................

55 RIGHT / Roy

.............X........................T..G..C..g..t..Y........................................
.....................S..................................H.........................................
.............1......2............3......4..Q..6......7...................8........9........
..............................................T..........................................

Want to go Empty

88 RIGHT

.............X........................T..G..C..g..t.................................Y..........
.....................S..................................H.....................T.................
.............1......2.............3......4..Q..T......7...................8.......9.......
...............................................5..........................................

Want to motions to Empty then tag T 68 or 52 or 49 or whatever.

Want some spinner action in your backfield

55 LEFT / S76

.............X........................T..G..C..g..t.................................Y..........
.....................H....................................S....................................
.............1......2............3......4..Q..6......7...................8........9........
..............................................T..........................................

S aligns at 7 then short motions on cue to 6 and the Q can  spin mesh off S

Want to mess with the Box Defenders and Yo-Yo...simply add a 3rd digit to your tag

55 LEFT / S767

.............X........................T..G..C..g..t.................................Y..........
.....................H....................................S....................................
.............1......2............3......4..Q..6......7...................8........9........
..............................................T..........................................

S aligns at 7 then short motions on cue to 6 then at the snap goes right back to 7. Or you can flat Yo-Yo motion him....S737....align at 7 then and on cue motion to 3 then back to 7. Q snaps the football when S is in position.

So the possibilities are endless.

Here is one of our playcalls for last Spring.

Cowboy Right // H Y 99 // Z35 // Quail Wicked

The "//" means there is a pause so that the playcalls dont run on and get confusing whether you huddle or not.

I literally out formationed an opponent in a Championship Game at the semi pro level for the victory. We only ran a dozen plays but it looked like 80. The opposing Header even commented too me after the game how awesome my Offense was. He was the DC guru of the League and certainly had the better team that day....on paper. I simply moved his talent around using formations.

WARNING....if you use alot of formations then you need a cheat sheet to call off of or you will forget stuff. The players dont....they do whatever they hear so its up too you to call it.

Attached is a cheat sheet example. I even draw the plays out so I can visualize the formations because you can go from straight up to the bizzaro. It also includes little reminder notes for trick plays and the like.

Hope this helps....you are dead nuts on the right track here.

This is what we did when we ran Pistol. Seems really simple and less wordy to me. Pistol tells formation. 1 or 2 tells RB line up to the right or left. Stack or Split tells H whether to stack on same side as RB or Split to the opposite side of RB. Hope this helps...

Here is where we landed with this.

Formation is three numbers and an R or L  ie "336L"

First number is # of spread receivers (3,2,1,0).  Additional Recievers would be in 2nd and 3rd numbers of call
Second number is Tailback location
Third number is H Back location
R/L is Slot location
.............L........................T..G..C..g..t.................................R..........
.....................S....7......5.....1........0...4.......6.......8.......................
........................................3.....Q.....2..........................................
...............................................0....................................................

So far it has been received well.  Unlimited looks cheap.

we just had Stack, Larry, Split, Flip that all moved from our Base set up. That gave us stack to both sides, offset to both sides. and the a set up the RB and H to both sides of the QB
