AAU through Pop Warner?
« on: October 15, 2018, 11:38:44 AM »
Curious if any of you have experience w/ running an offseason AAU basketball team under a Pop Warner umbrella? Looking to find out how this works logistically. We have the players ready to go, we just want to bring them under us as opposed to the basketball ORG theyíve been apart of.

Just create your own AAU basketball team. There are no boundaries in AAU.

I would be surprised if PW allows it. After Dec 31st they cut loose all ties to players and coaches until Aug. 1st. They get real snooty about you using their logo, equipment or even the team name outside of official PW events. Even fund raising can get tricky if they want to get silly about it. I wouldn't want to deal with their bs.

Well we are an incorporated business. We can pretty much do as we please under our business name. Worst case scenario we just fly our Inc name & not Pop Warner. We have our own private insurance & all that.

Really Iím just trying to figure out if AAU is fine w/ it. We want to use our non profit EIN & insurrance instead of theirs.

Why would you need a business to run a AAU team? The beauty of AAU basketball is that there is nothing more than a AAU card/fee..that's it.

I don't know about you, but I find it nicer to manage the money for these things when they have their own bank account instead of co-mingling it with my own personal accounts.  Being an LLC also provides you with a layer of protection in extreme instances.

For 1, I know nothing about AAU.

2, weíre trying to use it as a recruiting tool for football. Our PW org. would pay for uniís, insurance, and all assosiated fees. In order to do that, we have to attach the business to it. Anytime money is coming in & out, we have to account for it somehow.

Maybe Iím missing something tho.

If you use your team org's name for anything competitive or athletic outside of Pop Warner parameters (Aug.1-Dec.1) then you have to get permission from Pop Warner to do so.   They are not only protecting their brand, they are protecting themselves from a lawsuit if someone gets hurt participating in your basketball program, football camp, etc.  Chances are, they probably won't find out what you're doing, but if they do, they might ask you to cease and desist.

I don't think there would be a problem with it, as long as you don't use any PW logo or likeness. A few years back, there was a team down at PW Nationals called Shaker Fire from Shaker Hts., OH. They were run by the Shaker Hts. Fire Dept. In addition to PW football, they had AAU basketball and track & field.

Their whole philosophy was to keep kids physically active year-round, and away from the trouble kids can get into when they're bored or otherwise disengaged. I liked their program, and the coaches I spoke to were very open about it and committed to their org's mission.

OTOH, I haven't seen them at Nationals for a couple of years, so I don't know whether they're still operating. It could just be that they haven't sent a team to nationals.

Gotcha. I think the theme here is to just leave the words Pop Warner out of it.

Iím not so much concerned about the Pop Warner sode of it. More concerned w/ how how/if our business can be tied to AAU.
