Its over.

Last game as Header and Coach.

We went out in the first round of the playoffs.  Finished the season 5-3 and scored on our last possession of the season (18-8).  This group has played in the playoffs and Championship game all but one year.  This season was special because they were 90% self driven. (My Loud Mouth just put them on task every so often)  By that I mean it was upon them to exact their results and accept victory and defeat.  So proud of the way these kids stepped up and worked hard to achieve.  How do I know?  Towards the end of the game I called Time Out to give em a breather.  My QB comes to me and says we got this one coach!  I just replied Then Go! They scored and got the 2 point conversion as well.  I don't like losing any more than any of you do!  Yet last night the Pointy ended ball just didn't bounce our way!

I could have played my best 11 regardless but, honestly, that's not my style.  20 kids practice 20 kids get playing time!  Why? Simply because I have seen so many One Taskers or MPP's go on to have SOLID HS careers.  Why say cant when, imho, if you can teach a lick and they can learn a bit, its a Win/Win.   They cant build CONFIDENCE on the Sidelines!

Cue the Fat Lady

so you're done coaching forever?
If you show up for a fair fight, you are unprepared.

Lets just say.  I am willing to hand over the Clip Board and Header responsibilities.  Love the Struggle!  Hate the Politics!  I have been a part of our Program from the Start both as a Coach and Board Member.  I am not such the EGO Maniac as to believe I am the be all, end all!

I have some prospects with individual coaching.  O and D line.  ;)

A very good friend of mine has been coaching 30 plus years. He has been a header and coordinator at some big time teams. He was starting to get really burned out so I talked to him about just coaching a position. His batteries are recharged now and he says he forgot how much he enjoyed coaching the nuances while not having to worry about the bs.

How to make 10 Pizzas disappear!  Invite kids!

With a twinge of sadness (for me at least) we turned in our equipment and chowed on Pizza! Hard to believe the kids I took over as 5th graders are going to be Freshmen.  Hard to believe the prior group I had are now Seniors in High School.  That's the last nine years of my life as a Coach in a nut shell.   Add in the fact that the first group of kids are now in their mid 20's and some are Dads, its been a long ride!

I had a dad, first year assistant with grades 2/3 tell me, I played but never thought abou
t coaching. He continued, its funny how you get attached to the kids, when you Coach!

BINGO!  Welcome to the disease!   :P

The best part about coaching is running into my former players when I am out and about. It is awesome hearing how they are doing and seeing the young men they have become. The best part is that they all still call me coach :)

Recently,  I was all but cornered to take next years 5th grade team.

That puts me a 60 when they are 8th Graders.   I denied my willingness to  take on the task.

Predicate:  I am old and surly!  I don't take "Jack Squat" about playing time or position. It's all about the needs of the Team!  This squad played in the Championship game and lost!  Similar scenario to the last group I had.  ALL prior coaches resigned after this season!  If I take same, its Me and no one else!

Honestly, I was 10 years younger I wouldn't hesitate to say yes! However,  I am at the point where I am OK with being an Assistant.  It's time for someone else to deal with the Politics of being a Header.

Still hearing the rumbles from some to take this group.

It's not that I dont like to coach or enjoy working with the kids.  The Fact is some younger folks need to step up!   What happens when I fall over my Walker and break a hip?

Fairly content to mow the field and piddle around with the equipment for a while.

However, fairly sure the murmurs will turn into Public Address Announcement if no one raises their hand.

I am looking at coaching this year with some of the younger kids.  We are starting to get some numbers with young kids that we have not had recently, but there are not a lot of people stepping up to coach.  I am looking at it as an opportunity to get kids involved and to educate some other coaches so that they can take over next year.

Sometimes, parents just need some guidance and confidence to do what they think they are incapable of.  That sounds like coaching to me. :)

In my role as trainer many many years ago, we called it "Training the Trainer". Now you're coaching the coaches.
