I spent the early part of my time as "DUM" Coach strictly on Defense!  I studied 40-50 and 60 fronts.  I have books on all.

Later, in my Header Days, I had to learn Offense, like right now!

Yet, as much as I like the Chess Game on Offense,  I still want my Defense to be Stifling!

My preference is Defense.

You are entirely correct 007.  However, Being Lord and Master over all comes with a heavy price!

Yet, I still know that people have a predilection for one side of the ball or the other!

 ;)
If you understand football? I do not understand how you cannot have an opinion on what works vs what doesn't. And at the youth level, IT ENTITLES YOU TO HAVE SERIOUS INPUT into both sides of the ball. I do not think there are even close to that type of knowledge in the youth game.

The defense and O-line are mine.

I had called plays in the past but joined forces with another coach who has a great offensive mind. I recognized his gift and gave him the offense. We install stuff together but he calls plays on Saturday's. We make big decisions together but I trust him implicitly.

And at the youth level, IT ENTITLES YOU TO HAVE SERIOUS INPUT into both sides of the ball. I do not think there are even close to that type of knowledge in the youth game.  This statement makes no sense.  Its either you have the knowledge or you don't.  I've seen a lot of teams with "Headers" whose only claim was to the Title, a Football, and a Clip Board. I have witnessed and experienced when its very possible to allow an OC or DC run their squad with oversight and input.  If you cant trust the folks you have on your staff why have them?   Am I reading this wrong

When I build my staff, I look at defensive side of the ball first, because if I am over a side of the ball I want the offense. I always have the capability of running either side, but I feel more comfortable making adjustments on the offensive side.

I was just the opposite I had to learn offense first then defense.   I too have books and notes on just about everything.  Being a very opinionated person on both O and D so I will have to choose based on if I have another coach that's good and depending on what he can run I will run the other.  I will still have alot of input especially at the beginning.

You bet yer sweet arse I have an opinion one way or the other!  You can bet they will hear it too!  However, I am not the Be All, End All!  If the OC or Dc has plausible arguments and Ideals to the contrary, KUDOS for doing your homework! I will listen and observe!

FACT!  The effectiveness O and D you run is limited to the ability of your kids to run same!   Its either minimal or expansive! If I was a good Header, I demand limited to start!  Yul Brenner pose in the "King And I, Impress me!"  But be willing to be impressed!

There are degrees of  expertise, knowledge. Not all amount of knowledge is the same. At the youth level, trust is earned. It is not, nor should it be freely given. Then finally, we all have opinions, but we also all have a-holes.
Having said all that I am not giving titles and control away like candy. Control, trust must be earned, especially where I am at. I think most of the coaches I socialize with, on the football are close to a zero.
Lot of coaches who are just repeating what they learned in HS. No thanks.

Dude I am a GIANT AHOLE!

Yet, as a Header,  I am willing to allow folks to offer opinions and espouse their abilities!  IN FACT I want them to!  Its the best way to find guys who want to Coach and be a header!

I didn't say I wouldn't teach, wouldn't train. I said I would not give away titles and control like candy. I want opinions but I want informed opinions. Espouse ability to follow directions, study and contribute in an informed way, Then finally show me you understand what I am looking for when you get on the practice field. Only one way to do things. The minute that is a problem, one of us is leaving.

As a HC, I have had to OC and DC the past 2 years.  It is hard, especially since I am not particularly strong at coaching defense.  I am hoping to get someone to either OC or DC for me this year.  I would prefer to stay as OC, as I am much more well versed on that side of the ball.

Okay, in a perfect world I'd call the O and delegate the D. I would be very happy not having to worry about the defense at all. That hasn't been the case for the 12 years I've coached, but I would like it to be.

At this point of my coaching progression, I'd want to remain in charge of one side of the ball or the other, I would not want an OC and a DC and "just" be the HC. Not right now anyway. I'd be fine being an AC again in the right situation, I'd prefer it be on O as well. I'd even be wiling to just coach the backs or the OL and not call the plays for the right HC. I just wouldn't want to do that AS the HC.

Ideally, I would love to have 2 great coordinators, one for offense and another for defense.  If I have one assistant capable of running on side of the ball, I would put him where he is strongest and I would take the other side.  If I had the choice, I would probably run the offense.

Most years I have been both.  I will not give up control to an assistant coach unless he is capable and I think it will benefit the team by freeing me to concentrate on some other aspect.  If I think the team will be better off by me doing everything, I will do everything.

Last year was the first time in 12 years that I had an assistant who I fully trusted to take one side of the ball.  He was a previous high school head coach whose son was a 7th grader playing for me.  This guy was the best assistant coach I have had as far as knowledge and teaching fundamentals.  I learned from him, but he had been fired from the HS after a couple really bad seasons and is still very hesitant to jump back in the fire.  I offered to let him run what he wanted on defense but he only wanted to coach linebackers.  I hope he comes back next season and will offer him either side of the ball if he does.
