Starting a club team/organization
« on: July 07, 2015, 01:03:39 PM »
Let me preface by saying that this is not football related, so please forgive me for that.  But I felt like I could probably get some good words of wisdom from the great minds here, as your experiences have often gone beyond just coaching football.

I'm looking into starting an AAU/club basketball team next spring, with the eventual goal of this growing into a larger organization with teams at multiple age levels.

I was wondering if anybody has any experience doing anything similar, in any sport?

My initial plans are to go the LLC route, establish a bank account, hopefully have some credit in the LLC name and operate it that way.  Through my research it looks like I can still get the AAU insurance even if I'm not operating as a non-profit.

What are some hurdles, guidelines or other precious pieces of advice you guys can offer?

Thanks!

I have no clue about starting a team but my kid plays on several AAU basketball teams. Just like every other sport coaching is the key. He has played for good coaches and bad coaches. Coaches who go by on talent early but as the kids got older got smashed because of better coaching....and better talent.

One thing I couldn't do is coach basketball....the know it all parents are so close and constantly yelling about what you should be doing. And parents coaching their kids from the stands. Seen kids destroy a team because daddy was yelling from the stands and the kid was doing what he said...which was opposite what the coach was trying to get him to do. With our football league we play on high school fields and parents can't be on the field so I could never hear there them which was nice.

AAU basketball is cut throat. Coaches always recruiting kids away from teams if they are good. So like I said no experience in starting a team but seen the AAU basketball drama and its nuts ! Good luck !

I assisted on my daughter's 5th grade AAU team this past spring.  We went 24-4, winning 4 out of the 7 tournaments and finishing second in the other 3.  I want to start my own club because I didn't like the level of organization in the club we played for and I didn't totally see eye to eye with the HC.  He is a good guy, but I'd rather be able to do things completely my way, as opposed to being handcuffed in certain areas and whatnot.  Plus, organization has always been my strong point.

I understand the cut throat nature of the aau game.  In our last tournament we played another 5th grade team that had a girl that was easily 6'5" and probably pushing 300lbs.  I overheard a conversation between a coach from another grade level and the tournament director. The coach was telling the director that if he knew that program was playing in the tournament he would have never brought his club, because that program is widely known for age cheating.

We played in some pretty intense games too and it's fun to see the players play at a higher level and believe in the things you teach them and pull out a victory.

That has crossed my mind before posting this thread.  But I wondered how much of it was football specific vs being transferable to other sports.  I'll have to give it a look.
