Indroduction from a lurker
« on: November 12, 2018, 02:04:23 PM »
Hello coaches. ive been lurking this season and i've picked up a lot. I'm an AC/OC for 4th and 5th graders. We ended our season this weekend at 5 - 4 with a playoff win, and then a loss to the undefeated #1 seed in the semifinals. I will be taking over HC duties for this team or the 6th and 7th graders depending on how we restructure our coaches. I want to start now in planning for next season. Ive been an AC for two yrs and want to hit the ground running as the HC. We ran a flexbone offense (the choice of the HC), but i'm wanting to use a different offense. I like what the Wing T offense looks like that so many of you guys use. We also had a 4-4 stack defense that worked well for us. I want to spend the winter preparing hard for next season, so what advice, off season preparations, suggestions, etc. can you offer this rookie coach.  :). I'm sure i'll also have plenty of questions as we approach next year, so thanks in advance. If I've learned one thing from lurking, is that there is a vast pool of football knowledge to pull from here at Dumcoach.

Welcome!

There are some formational similarities, as well as, amazing misdirection used by both the Flex and Double Wing.

If you chose the Wing-T you cannot go wrong with Clarks Material (DCWING-T).

If you're already using the Stack 4-4 I suggest looking at JR Titan's Split 4-4 material. there might be some material you can mix in as a means to amaze and confuse your opponents.

Good Luck

With 4th and 5th graders?  Why?

It was what he was familiar with. Now it can be changed.

Although we did ok with the defense, i'm looking at others as well. Ive been consuming anything i can get on GAM defense. I'm also reading about the Killer Bee defense as well.

If you face a team that can pass well, the GAM can get you killed.

what advice

Be as organized as you know how to be.

Place import on fundamentals ahead of scheme.

Invest yourself in your players.  Don't use them for their talent, or run them off if they want to play.

Run transparent practices.

Parents Meetings are your friend, as long as you know what to say and how to say it.

Hey Dave, I'll be here all winter. LOL. I like to think i'm coachable as well.  :)

Your ability to teach and communicate is far more important than your football knowledge.  Your key to success on the field is based more on doing a few things very well, then being able to do a lot of things.  If you don't know what a 3-Technique is, it won't matter.  Conversely, if you played college football, it won't matter.

Know what you want to specifically accomplish.  If you don't know, you won't accomplish it.  Bad stuff that happens is more your fault than your player's fault.

Knowing what you're going to teach your players is far more important than you learning what I'd teach your players.

Thank you Dave for the insights and experience. I got into coaching because i care about boys becoming young men and the character they develop. I played peewee and high school but was never a stand out. Fundamentals will be my primary focus because it seems this is where the youth level is won or lost IMO. I can't stand when a coach yells "Block somebody!". They need to know who and how. That is why I came to this forum, to learn from some of the best so I'm teaching the best techniques, the best way possible.

--It's important that you believe this and aren't merely saying it.  Your words with kids carry weight like few others.

Fundamentals will be my primary focus because it seems this is where the youth level is won or lost IMO.

--I'll agree with you.

Fundamentals:

Know what the fundamentals are. (There's plenty more than 1 or 2.  And make sure they're age-appropriate.)

Know how to teach them. (Practice on your kids/wife/neighbor/boss or in from of the mirror.  Reduce the number of words you use while increasing the thoroughness without increasing the complexity.  THIS IS NOT EASY.)

If the players aren't interested in learning them, that's a direct reflection of how interesting they find you.

Have more fundamentals to teach, than time available to teach them. (The biggest reason coaches teach the "same old" fundamentals is because they're the only fundamentals they know to teach.

Don't stand around and talk while teaching fundamentals.  Talk while moving and creating action.

I like what the Wing T offense looks like that so many of you guys use. We also had a 4-4 stack defense that worked well for us. I want to spend the winter preparing hard for next season, so what advice, off season preparations, suggestions, etc. can you offer this rookie coach.  :)

Welcome!

I don't know Clark's DC Wing-T, but I know the traditional Delaware Wing-T.

You'll be as good as your OL coach in that offense.  The OL coach needs to know how to coach the stance and start well, along with down blocks, kick outs, wraps, scoops, and maybe log blocks.  If he can teach those handful of skills, you'll be ok.  The RBs just need to know how to run their tracks and sell good fakes.  QB needs to hide the ball, fake, and occasionally hit a drag every now and then.

My advice is to pick 1 formation to base from (you may not need more at that age level), then run Belly Series (Belly, Tackle Trap, Keep Pass, Rocket Sweep--maybe Down), and Buck Series (Sweep, Trap, Waggle, Throwback Screen) to the opposite side.  Those 8-9 plays would be just about all you'd ever need.  They work together beautifully if you coach the blocking, faking, and other fundamentals.  If you have a hard time running Trap, you can substitute Wedge and it'll work nearly as well.

Structure your practice so everyone gets reps blocking down and kicking out, because just about everyone in that offense will be doing it.
