1st scrimmage in the books
« on: August 21, 2017, 11:58:05 AM »
Well, we had a lot of encouraging things & def a lot to work on. We scrimmaged 4 teams. 3 of which combined to go 22-2 last year in the reg season.

The good: We probably have the most physically dominant RB in the region. I mean this kid was just absolutely destroying everything in his path. His running style is gery rare in youth football. He has great moves & feet, but he is incredibly violent as a runner. He's like Marshawn. Think he knocked at least 4 kids out of the scrimmage.
We scored every drive vs every team (whenever we didn't just reset the ball). But we were only playing on a field that was only 25 yards long & 40 wide (which killed our rockets & fly series.

The Bad: Our O-line was meh. We made a lot of mistakes. We were missing a starter & starting 3 1st year players. I have confidence that they will gel & be a good unit soon tho.

Our pass coverage was awful. Defensively we were just okay to sometimes just bad (vs the elite teams we played). We're pretty fast but we're undersized compared to our competition. We we're catching guys more than meeting em at the POA & standing em up.

Overall it was a very encouraging scrimmage. We basically lost a week by having the team below us fold & join our team. Really set us back because we had to go back & re-teach 11 kids what we were doing. So we have some catching up to do. Most of the teams we faced have been together for some time. We're more of a mish-mash unit.

I'm not booking any flights to Florida. I think it's POSSIBLE. But right now if I had to guess we're probably 6th out of 24 teams. I think if we scout well & continue to develop our 1st year players, we could possibly get in that top 2.

Our 1st game is against a team who's PW's & JV's combined to go 15-1 last year. So it's gonna be a rough 1st test. We're probably not ready for em yet. But we'll see if we can get em there & pull off an early upset.

Sounds like a good honest self assessment coach.  We have our first scrimmage this week and 1st game Sunday.  Rain has been a bear here in Jersey with scheduling but looking forward to what our little group can do this year too.  Best of luck vs the big first hurdle, one down at a time, one series, one quarter etc.  Win the little battles and youll win the war.

Thanks bud. It just occured to me that if we beat these guys, it'd be the 1st time in our program history. We've always been D2 or D3, they've always been D1. So haven't had a chance to play them very often. I've been coaching 10 years & never played em.

Gonna be a really fun challenge.

We did. 1st time, 10 yards. 2nd time 4 yards. 3rd time, told the other team "we're running right here", 2 yards. 4th time, bad snap.

Considering we ran it 4 times in a row, thought it went pretty well.

So you are out of full on panic mode? By the times playoffs come you'll be right there. You might not win it but you'll have a shot.

Ha ha. I don't know man. We might REALLY suck on defense. lol. We can score on everyone thanks to the scheme & having baby Marshawn, but man, we are REALLY undersized compared to our opponents. We have 2 max weight O/L's, & a bunch of Pee Wees playing up. I got 3 kids under our minimum weight! lol

That said, if our top 11 can stay healthy, I think we can pull off some crazy 45-35 type wins over the other elite teams. The thing we have going for us is we're virtually unkown to all the teams that were D1 before it went to open division. We just hardly ever played those guys.

Right now our goal is to go a minimum of 6-2 & lead the conference in scoring. I feel like if we reach those 2, we'll probably be good enough to pull off something crazy. But I really just don't have a good feel for this team. We could win this sunday or we could get clocked. The team we're playing sunday will be the best oppoent I've face in the regular season, in probably 8 years. So it's definitely a fun challenge. I actually thrive on the panic. It motivates me to dig deeper. I spent 4 hours scouring the web for game film on our opponent last night. lol
