2 Jamborees - 4 mini-games in - Game 1 this Saturday!

Coaching 7U is much different than coaching 6U last year.  Last season, half of my team were 5 year olds.  This season, I have a couple of 8 year olds, 15 7 year olds, and only 1 6 year old.  The jump in maturity is astounding.

Our first jamboree was against 2 teams in our league, our week 1 opponent and our week 6 opponent.  We moved the ball at ease against our week 1 opponent and only gave up 2 big plays on defense.  We used those to drill down on personal responsibility and shut them down for the last 15 minutes of the defensive session.  We lost our best player on the first play of the second mini game and 100% my fault, his backup was not ready.  Still, we stopped them on defense, for the most part, and were able to move the ball and hit a couple of big plays.  I'm confident we will be able to handle them when we meet them.

The second jamboree was against 2 teams that were in our league last season.  Our organization changed leagues this year.  The first team beat us 38-6 last season.  We "thumped" them in the jamboree, scoring 4 or 5 times while liberally subbing players to get them reps.  We gave up 2 scores, one on a pass, we haven't worked pass defense all year, and one on a broken play where we missed 3 or 4 tackles. They have one kid who can take over a game and we shut him down except for that one play without keying on him.  Overall, we felt good about that kind of turnaround.  Game 2 was against a team that beat us 53-0 last year.  They have 5-6 athletes better than our best athlete.  They scored 6 times on us BUT we had multiple times we were in the right spot but the ball carrier pulled loose and went to the house.  Offensively, our starters ran it down their throat, scoring twice on them.  This was not a great result BUT shows lots of improvement from last season.  I don't think we'll see a team that athletic or well coached this season in our league.
