Brian, what's bittersweet about it?  You're winning.  And guess what, there's another group of great kids right around the corner.  Look forward to them.

--Dave

I definitely will look forward to next season.  But I think bittersweet is the perfect word.  Every team deserves a closing chapter, but we can still be sad that the story is over while looking forward to the next book in the series to come out.  This is just one of those teams that resonates with you, their personalities and attitudes were great.  It has been a great ride, and I am ready for one hell of a curtain call.

It went to the dumcoach coach.  They played right after our game, and by the time I got done addressing my team, and cleaning up, it was 13-0, and by time I got in the stands by my wife, it was 20-0, I guess our 3 first offensive plays were lost fumbles.

Dcooz did a great job calling plays.  Now I will be able to happily pull for him in his championship game.
Did he at least honor your secret Dumcoach handshake and let your kid score?

Ha! I am going to say he would have, but my kid did not get any carries.

Well the season did not end the way we had hoped.  We lost in the championship 18-6.  We had beat this team in week 9, but they were missing a key player then... who turned out to be quite the difference maker.  The kid is the son of Frank Thomas, and he is a really good RB.  At one point, he had 4 carries for 3 TD (The 1 carry he did not score, was a TD called back on a penalty.)  We had no answer for him.  He always found the seam, one cut, and gone.  He was very patient and did not lose speed with change of direction.   We could not stop him.

Offensively, we moved the ball, but every drive was ending because of a mistake, when we would get in the open field, they had 2 guys with the speed to catch us down.  They were selling out to stop the 23 and 24 real fast... so we were attacking the edge and perimeter. It just was taking us too many plays each drive, and my QB was really struggling for some reason...

The highlight of the day was the lone TD we had, it was a TD pass to my SE, who could have played down as an older lighter.  He is probably 64 pound 9 year old.  Good kid, quiet, first year player, always gave great effort.  Had a couple catches through out the year.  But no TDs.  We had dialed up a 28 Toss Pass that we had just installed, would have been a 20 yard TD pass.  pass hit his hands, and he drops it.  Few plays laters, we are at the 3, terrible play call time, call up the 28 Toss Pass again, cornerback steps up again, 2 back lofts it over his head, a little high again but this time he catches it!  Was awesome to get this kid his first ever TD.  He deserved it for sure.

It was a great season, the team we lost to was just bigger and faster and stronger than us.  It happens.  It was a great season and a ton of fun.  The kids learned a lot, improved a lot and really enjoyed themselves.  I think we surprised a lot of people this year.  One of my assistants said something, he said we had to do more with less and we did. I agree with him.  I don't think anyone outside of our team saw us as a 10 win team and for good reason, we were a hodge podge group (based on how our teams are formed). But the kids bought in and did an awesome job playing as a team.

It was without a doubt the season I needed, I was burned out after the past 2 seasons, having to battle with attitudes and enabling parents.  I am ready for this off season, and seeing what happens for next season, not sure where or what level I will be coaching at this point.  I am on the wrong side of the politics there, but wherever I end up, I will strive to be the coach those kids deserve.

I should also mention, this was the first time this team had been down in a game all season.  They struggled at first, then we got to half time, kids were already crying a bit.  We talked things out, and they came out and played a pretty good half of football.  Held them scoreless, and we scored our TD.

Nice season B. Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed the read.

Hope whatever works out next year works out for you. Politics suck.
Collect moments, not wins.

Ran some numbers today.  We scored 30 total touchdowns.  The largest percentage of TDs was scored by my FB, he had 10 TDs.  We had 8 different players score touchdowns for us, with a roster size of 16, that is exactly half.  At least 4 or 5 of the kids that scored, it was their first career touchdown.
