2018 Spring Preview
« on: January 11, 2018, 01:50:12 PM »
Climbing the walls waiting for Spring football to start. The snow here sucks this year and the warm weather has limited the ice fishing. So here's a preview for this Spring.

First off, full disclosure, we are "cutting" 3 players. Or maybe we're actively inviting them not to play for us this Spring. In Spring, we are a private team and are free to form our roster as we see fit as long as they meet the age (and weight for "play downs") requirements. All 3 kids have been playing "dress up" for awhile and the coaches are in agreement that it isn't fair for them to steal plays from the kids who have a passion for what we do. Again, full disclosure, all 3 are MPPs. There's a 4th who was on the bubble, but I fought for him because despite his limitations, he really showed us some fire and desire playing on the o-line last Fall.

Our main rival from the Spring claims they aren't coming back and are instead doing "Spring football activities" with the high school they will be matriculating to. In CO, it is illegal for HS coaches to have contact with 8th graders and younger, so Mahonz and I think it's possible that if/when they find this out, they change their minds and decide to play. Sure hope so because kicking their ass has been a lot of fun. There's another team who can give us a run, but they are really a one-man team and I'm not sure that his physical advantages will hold up now that everyone is getting bigger and faster.

Offensively, we're talking about going 100% Beast. Mahonz has asked that we find out how far we can push Beast. So I'm introducing a couple of twists, including a short side flanker that can Jet/Rocket, as well as Bob's side saddle. I reached out to the local side saddle coach and we're supposed to get together for lunch to talk about it. I'm going to replace "butt to the ball" with Michael's "run them where they want to go". I'm also going to revisit Mahonz' pin and pull scheme. It's a simple swap cross block involving the AT man. We'll call it from the sideline at first, but once they "get it", I'll let the AT man call it on his own when he's the landmark. I want to really push the passing game out of Beast as well. The short side flanker combined with the short Guard (technically an End) is intriguing.

Defensively, it looks like we're going with the "DC-46 Lite" so we can gear up for next year's 2nd graders. I'm interested in how it will work against our pass happy opponents.

Just read an email from Mahonz. He pussed out and is keeping one of our "cuts". I must be rubbing off on him. If anybody out there is trying to get rid of any unwanted puppies, Mahonz and I have you covered.  >:(

If we can figure out how to marry Clarks KB Zone with Clarks DC 46 then we should be good. If not....then your Offense better be a scoring machine.  8)

And yes...Im getting soft in my old age. Damn-it.  :(

Why not invite them all, put them through boot-camp, see who wants to be out there (you can't fake it there) and go from there?

These 3 would call in sick.  >:(

The issue I am having....its the last hurrah for 30 Manimals. Every single one of the players on this team will play HS ball and will start. Past experience says these 3 have earned NOTHING when it comes to playing time. They only care about the uniform.

So....Im not interested in allowing them to steal any more playing time from the others. The kid I let back in....we have an understanding. He might not make it out of pre season.

Our Staff decided to treat this team as though they were now in HS....and all of the schools they will be attending are big Programs so its step up.....earn everything or go home. One of the Programs are the defending State Champs with so much depth they might not even know your name until you are a Sophomore.

One already quit football entirely. The other two I'm 100% certain want to be there and they would probably make it through whatever gauntlet we come up with. Unfortunately, they want to be there for the wrong reasons. I call them "trick or treaters" because they show up in their football costume. One of them actually cried as a 7th grader as our WR coach was trying to teach him how to stalk block a CB. Tears in his eyes: "WHAT IF I GET TRUUUUCKED???!!!" These are the kids who would happily waive their minimum plays.

Then they don't play.  But then that's their choice.  The way you're doing it is making the decision for them.  I let my players decide.

4,3 and 1 season(s)

Man. I'd have a hard time cutting the kids w/ 3+ years experience.

I've never understood why kids show up every year, put the uni on, even tho they're terrible/afraid. But overtime i've learned to kind of admire some of those kids. The one's that are there cuz they want to be (not forced by parents). They do what I would have never been willing to do myself.

The idea they only care about the uniform seems like it's probably a misrepresentation. It's much more likely that they're seeking friendship/comradery. I kinda feel like those kids need us more than the studs that are gonna rip it up in HS.

Just my 2 cents. If the evil cheater thinks it's kinda off.... lol

Should add, I don't know the situation. Like, if they're a cancer or constant distraction, then that might change things. Not saying what you should do, every situation is different.

I didnt even think twice about it since we are an Independent select team that pays all of their own Bills. Its Lar that has to keep all the puppies....me?....only too a point.

My take....everyone is good at something. These kids will never be good at football....ever....unless they go into coaching which one of our players is going to do since he will be on IR until May. He would have been my 4th cut BTW. My foot was so far up his ass the last two seasons....I almost renamed our Godzillas after him. I almost made a 5th cut but this kid saved his own butt last Fall and is one of Lar's puppies.

This team will be 3 months from HS ball once we hit the field. Time to grow some hair on your balls and get ready for....reality.

--We don't cut anyone.  Never have.  Never will.  We do make it hard to play for us, though.  Real hard.  But if you want to play, then we want you out there.

--Exactly.  Some kids can't play a lick, but have the heart of a gladiator.  I want those kids.  On the other end, if kids don't show up, then they don't want to be there and there's no reason even extending an invitation to them.
