Week 6...

We are going to play one of the teams we are bunched up in the standings with...weather calling for Thunder Storms by 11:00 AM, kick off is at 10:00....we get to the field...just kind of sprinkling...and we start our pre-game ritual...starts raining hard and sideways...been here before...

Coin toss, we win the toss and take the ball...they kick off out of bounds, we elect the spot plus five and go to work...two plays and a quick first down...then we run ISO for 4, ISO again to another back and instead of following his lead he tries to split the C/G combo block...instead of what looked like a 10 yard gain was a 1 yard gain...3 and about 5...we call swing, swing out of the back field under double slants...we told the QB to throw the swing...ball is snapped, they send a slot corner on the blitz...happy feet, he throws to one of the slants, and about a foot behind him...4th down, we elect to punt...we get a quick 3 and out they are punting from about the 25...one of our returners tries to field the punt and it slips through his hands and hits the turf. Luckily, our other return guy fell on it...

Offense goes to work on the 50 and we drive the ball down their throat...scoring from about 20 yards out on jet sweep...kick is good 8-0 1:47 left in the first quarter...I get the kicking ball out and the official calls me over...the trainer is calling for a lightning delay.

We clear the field and I go over to talk to the trainer...she shows me the lightning app which shows the lightning at 16 miles...I asked her why she didn't wait until it was 10 miles, and she showed me the radar...look at this cell coming in...I said, when its at 10 miles is when you clear the field, not when you see the radar map...the field was already cleared at that point...so I asked when can we come back out...she said 10:45. So we got shelter over in the restroom area and hung out for 30 minutes...at 10:42 I walked over to the officials and said, do we get a warm up? He said yeah, 5 minutes....so I wait until 10:45 and then call the team out...and we start warming up...we get about 10 minutes in and they make an announcement over the PA, all of the games for the day are canceled.

So I call the boys over, tell them to have their parents watch their email to see if they reschedule or whatever....we break it out and go home....I get all the wet stuff and lay it out all over the house, then go to Lowes and get a new valve dohickus for one of the toilets, fix my toilet and by 1:00 PM the rain and lightning are gone...so I bounce around the house for the rest of the day...unsatisfied (except for the fixed toilet, that was mildly satisfying).

Sunday, I talk to one of the board members and he says they are not going to make up the weekends games....(70 and muggy at the time, no rain or lightning in sight). I suggested they screwed up calling all of the games off at 10:48 in the morning...he agreed...but what is done is done...

2 games left in the regular season to sort out the log jam of tied teams...oh and it is going to rain all week, and probably Saturday too :P The weather man said this was the wettest fall since 2000....
None of them suck, they just haven't found what the kid is good at yet.

Week 7...

The rain went away Saturday morning while we slept...we had to go indoors twice leading into the game to get any sort of practice in. The practices were pretty good...although we really couldn't tackle...

We are playing one of the week sisters in our division, actually the only week sister in our division...they have not won a game yet...and on top of that, we have played them 4 times over the years and the combined score we have beaten them by is 99-19...but last year, my Dawgs walked in expecting them to lay down for them, and they almost got beat, scoring in the 4th quarter to make it a 16-12 victory...I heard one boy say "it's only the Texans" and reminded them, they almost lost last season...oh, and these guys hate us...they think we teach our boys to play dirty...

Saturday morning, show up at the park...go through our pre-game, everything is going pretty well, except kicking...the kicks are all a little wonky....but I select the captains...the boys had already told me they want to start with the ball...we win the toss, and take the ball...they try an onside kick..we cover it at mid field and go to work...oh my film lady (who I happen to be married to) is late, so I have no film for the first drive...but we take the ball and shove it down their throats and score on WHAM...kick is good 8-0...

Film lady shows up in time to see our kick off 1st down they have five in the back field, so I push them back, they get 4 back, then a loss of 1, and then a false start...3rd and 17...they try to throw....pressure from up the middle and both edges...QB is hit as he throws and we pick it and take it to the house...we get a wonky kick and it is 14-0.

We try a medium range kick and try to beat them to the spot...it's close but they make a really nice play on the ball and their offense takes the field...we call a Safety blitz, and it works, they loose 5...but wait...our safety timed is just a little badly...offsides...1st and 5.then they lose 3, a gain of zero, a gain of 2, so they have 4th and 5...they go for it and lose a yard...we get to go on offense again...

1st and 10 from the 48...we call SLUGO...and the wheel route is wide open...43 yards to the 5...ugly throw or else the H catches it in stride and scores...he had to stop and wait for it :P we run WHAM again and get to the 1. We put the QB at X and use X as the QB (he is the back up) and call slant arrow...they cover it pretty well, so my QB decides to run...he gets stood up at the Goal line...but thats okay, my offensive line comes behind and pushes him in, another wonky kick, but it is good....22-0.

We kick off, they return it to mid field...1st and 10, they are going to throw again...they take a huge 10 yard sack...2nd down they get 6 back, third down they go backwards a yard...so on 4th down, they decide to punt...right to one of my return guys...and he returns it for a TD...another wonky kick...and its 28-0.

We kick off again...1st and 10, no gain, 2nd down, they muff the snap and we recover on their 31 with about a minute and a half left...first down, fast screen to H for 6, we try and call time out so we can move some ball guys around and let someone else get some touches...the crew doesn't let us because we are up by 28, we burn about 20 seconds figuring out they are not going to give us the time out...so we call the play from the sideline, jet sweep....goes for 19 yards as time expires...down to their 6...

Half time...at the half, they have run 15 plays and netted -17 yards and turned the ball over twice. We have run about 12 (no film of the first drive) and netted 123. And we are going to be in the fast clock the entire second half, the clock only stops if the losing team calls TO or there is an injury time out...we talk to the boys at half time, telling them to keep up the intensity, get the shut out...we also tell them we are going to get some of the receivers and backs that don't normally get touches, to get touches...

We kick off they field it and return it to their 35...run 4 plays for a net of 2 yards and turn it over on downs...

1st down, we run counter to our back up H, he goes the wrong way and gets 3 yards...they we throw a fast screen to our Y, who the QB doesn't fully trust, but he makes the catch and takes it 14 yards...then we run WHAM to H, and the F misses the WHAM, gain of 0...we try SLUGO again...QB just over throws it...so we line up for a 32 yard FG...another wonky kick...but they hit our kicker as he is landing...no flag...end of the 3rd quarter...they take over at the 20.

1st down...lose a yard, second down, false start...2nd down again...they run a counter off of jet action, everyone has overpursued...one of our safeties makes the tackle after a gain of 26...they have their first first down and a total of 5 yards total offense. Next play they get one...the play after that our MIKE beats his block and slaps the ball out of the QBs hand as he is attempting to toss it for a sweep...ball on the ground...MIKE covers it 6 yards behind the LOS...

We get the ball back with about 3 minutes left...we run 4 plays net 16 yards...and with about 45 seconds on the clock, I tell my boys to line up and shake hands...

One game left...if we win we are in the playoffs...if we lose we need help (the canceled game made everything crazy), guess we get ready to win this weekend...had to shake the practice schedule up...supposed to get another 2 inches of rain on Wednesday....

None of them suck, they just haven't found what the kid is good at yet.

Week 8...we are playing essentially an elimination game...win and we are in, lose and we need help...pretty good week of practice, we installed a new formation to run stretch and jet sweep from, and a pass play with people criss crossing all over the place...it was a Tight Bunch formation, the bunch 3-5 yards outside the Tackle....

A decent week of practice, considering, I had to move Wednesdays practice to Tuesday because we were getting more rain...I figured the city would close the grass on both Wednesday and Thursday, and we would be okay for the walk through on Friday...turns out I was partially correct, they also closed the grass on Friday too...so the walk through was held in a parking lot. Boys were confident and loose...I felt good about our chances...

Pre-game...boys are amped up...they want the ball...we lose the toss, but the bad guys defer, so...we get the ball...we start at our own 45 after a pretty nice KO return...and start with Counter, +5, run it again, +3, stretch +3, WHAM +9, WHAM again +6, counter +2, counter +2...the oline is dominating...and we think we have them sucked down to stop the run, so we call our new criss cross pass, and it falls incomplete...then we go with SLUGO, its there, but the QB doesn't get enough air under the ball and a safety jumps it and picks it off...

Defense....they try power, lose 2, then a lead sweep and they get 7...another sweep, +5..first down they try and throw, we sack them for a 4 yard loss...second down, they run power and get 2 back, third and 12 they try and throw, an 8 yard sack...they punt...back to work.

Jet sweep, +14, Counter, we didn't get a DE blocked, no gain, then we run Strech again, and the blocking is all wrong, we didn't block the play side DE and lose a yard...throw Swing, +3, 4th and 8 from their 29, we go for it, pass is incomplete...

Defesne...the move one of their olineman to the deep back and hand it to him...a couple of hight tackles later and he has a first down and 18 yards...they hand it to him again and we stop him for a 2 yard gain...oh...on the previous possession, we saw they were doing something that was going to beat our coverage, so we made an adjustment to the coverage, explained to the safety and the corner, they had to switch if they were going to cross...apparently we didn't explain it well enough, on second and 8 from their 49, we ended up double covering one receiver but left one wide open...and with their QB running for his life, he saw it and made the throw...42 yard gain...first and goal from the 9, they run counter for the first time that day, my OLB crashed and after breaking two tackles they walk into the end zone, their kick is good. 8-0 bad guys...

They kick it deep and it is mishandle slightly...so we start on our own 29...run counter, still something wonky in the blocking +1, we call play action off counter, complete it, a db comes down and hits our H and then reach behind him and grabs the top part of the back of his jersey and pulls him straight down after a three yard gain, and the flag comes out...Horse Collar, so +18. Then we empty it out and call stretch...blocked perfectly...52 yard TD, kick is good, all tied up.

We try an onside kick, which they cover...and start at their own 49....the try and pass, we flush him, but he gets outside for a 7 yard gain...then they hand run power...plus 3 (with a really generous spot), pass incomplete, pass again, 5 yard sack, another pass, incomplete...they punt it to us and we start at our own 38 with about 30 seconds until half and a full compliment of time outs...

Back to work...Stretch, +7, stretch +6, we try SLUGO again and out QB hard counts and gets them to jump, plus 5, but we are now down to 1.1 seconds...from their 44 yard line, we try a fast screen....+10 as the half expires...

Half time, we better explain the switch to the Safeties and Corners, talk to the oline about getting the DE we keep missing blocked...tell them the score is 0-0 and lets take it to them....

We kick off behind the second line and try and cover it....rolls out of bounds at the 26, they take that and +5, so they are starting at the 31...first down, they get 4, second down, they get 6....first down, they run an option toss....and it breaks big....because their H was holding the snot out of our OLB....he scores....but they called the holding...1 and 20. they try and throw, minus 5 on the sack, they try and run the big kid again, no gain, third and 25...they try and pass...another sack, minus 10...on 4th and 35 they punt it back to us...oh, and the bad guys are trying to speed up the game, taking every bit of the 40 second clock to run their plays....they don't want us to have the ball in our hands...

we start at their 44...power for 9, counter+9, stretch, +8, stretch plus 10...the oline figured out the DE and are driving the defense all over the field....counter +4...2nd and goal....they get desperate and bring the house and it works, they drops us for a loss on power....they are selling out to stop the run so we call slant arrow, and I call all cuts for the protection, they are bringing 8 again ,but we cut them all down, QB has a perfect field of vision, but the ball comes out high, off of Z's hands and it gets picked in the end zone...they return it to the 11...

Oh, my videographer had a memory error, so the last play I have on film is their punt on the previous possession...but they have the ball with about 4 and half minutes to go...we force them to punt on 4th down, and we get it back with about 3 minutes left in the game at their 28.

So we go back to shoving the defense around again...Stretch +7, Counter +3, ISO +5, second and 5 from the 12...Jet Sweep, and it is blocked perfectly....X walks into the end zone untouched...kick is good, 16-8, less than 2 minutes to go...

We kick off and they start around the 40....I think they are going to try and go fast, but they have a full compliment of timeouts...they get a 1st down, and we move the safeties back...they run that option pitch again, and get another first down...we are now under a minute, and they have no time outs left...they try a half back option pass...which was a pretty nice call...they tossed it to their back, who is probably the best player in the league, and as I saw him bring the ball up and I think..."oh crap" so my eyes come down field, and see their receiver 10 yards behind my safety, and I think "oh crap", pass was perfect, hit him in the hands, in stride and he....dropped it...they have time for one more play....we know they are going to put it in his hands again...and they do...the run him up the seam from a wing back position...and he turns and faces the QB, who hits him with a good pass, but my safety is there and hits him in the back and wraps him, trapping his arms against him, as he is trying to toss it on the Hook and Lateral...his toss isn't very good and it hits the ground, and one of my DTs falls on it...with 2.5 seconds left...

I send the offense out to kneel on it...but the crew runs out the clock (which made me a little sad :P)...

We are in...3rd seed...playing the team we played in week 3 and beat in overtime in the driving rain...won't be raining this weekend.

Play offs round 1...

Good week of practice...the boys were trying to kill each other having to bring them down a bit so they don't hurt each other...having to train up a new MIKE and Safety as our MIKE got a concussion is LAX practice on Sunday...training goes pretty well...working on our reverse, but don't want to show it in the game, saving it for our next opponent if we win...but if we need it, it's ready...we are playing the team we had in week 3...beating them in the driving rain on a field goal in overtime...

Game day...arrive at the field...boys seem confident, a bit of swagger, and 20 mile per hour sustained winds going north to south...go through our pre-game ritual, and see what our kickers range is, in case we need to try a filed goal...seems to be about 32 yards...coin toss...we win, take the ball, they kick with the wind...which is exactly what I wanted, i wanted the wind in the second quarter and the 4th quarter...

We get the kick, and as we send the offense onto the field with the first play (power) everyone notices the clock keeper never got the clock set to start the game...so we sit and we sit and we sit...finally about 2 minutes later they get the clock set...we snap the ball, the mesh is a bit messy...and a blitzing LB punches the ball out, scramble for the ball, they recover...1st and 10 on the 21.

They try the right side on a sweep...they get 3, try sweep on our left, get a double on the outside LB and get 8...first and goal...then they run the ball down to the 2, but they held our OLB...1st and goal from the 19. run sweep left again, and get down to the 9...second and goal. then they try the right again, and our new MIKE finds the window, hits it and takes them down for a 3 yard loss. they run left...find two as our doubled OLB figures out how to string it out against the double...4th and goal from the 10...they drop back to pass and we drop him for an 8 yard loss...time to go to work...

Jet sweep +8, Power +3, fast screen to the Z, +24...fast screen to the slot, covered up so the QB throws it away...jet sweep +1, we throw crossing patterns, +13, slant/arrow, incomplete, counter, +1, fast screen to X, corner jumped it, QB threw it away, and is anxious, because he saw pre-snap it was not there, and we didn't kill it...time out...bring them over, talk to the QB, tell him he has a check down on the back side it that happens, or he could always pull it down and run...4th and 8, we call all go...no one is open, and they blitz...QB feels it, pulls it down and takes off...+10....new set of downs...we call slant arrow, incomplete...power, +21, TD, kick is good, 8-0.

We kick off, with the wind...we try and kick it deep, comes off the side of the kickers foot and goes out of bounds at the 25, they take the spot +5. 1st down, no gain, second down we drop them for a loss 3rd down they try and throw, pressure is too much, ball falls to the carpet...and they are punting into the wind...the punt nets them 10 yards in field position...

Swing, +8, false start...then stretch and we get caught in the backfiled for a 2 yard loss, 3rd and 9 from the 37, all go...TD, kick is good, 16-0.

Defense takes the field, on first down no gain, 2nd they run a reverse...first time they had shown that...they gain 9, they try a direct snap play to their big kid, low snap, ball rolls between his legs and we recover...back to work...about a minute left until have...first down, we have another false start...then we run counter, +2, time out, Dagger, incomplete...swing, the back slips down as he catches it for a one yard loss...time out...we call all go again, Y is behind the defense, ball is a little underthrown, he tries to adjust and drops it...turn over on downs...they have time for a few plays...

First down, they have the Center and the QB and their big back in the middle of the field, everyone else is on the LOS on the outside with their fast kid...Defense looks over at us, and we tell them to do their jobs, and we tell the OLB to jump the throw to the fast kid...QB has to alter the throw because our OLB is in the throwing lane...backward pass, caught, but the back put his knee down to catch it...loss of 6...last play of the half, they try and run the reverse again...stopped with a violent tackle for no gain...half time...

Gather the boys...tell them to quit beating themselves up, relax and play football...they are winning and they cannot move the football...

We kick off and they start their next drive...1st down, they pick up 9, then a false start, then a loss of 1, they try and throw again, incomplete with an OLB in the QBs face...4th and 7...they drop back to pass...sail concept...big kid in the flat...my tiny little corner, arrives just as he catches the ball and lays him out, and seperates him from the football...they recover the fumble, but it is only a gain of 2.

Back to work...WHAM +8, WHAM +5, ISO +8, ISO again +7...ISO again (why not?) Something in the blocking breaks down...and they meet my back at the LOS, and drive him backwards....for some reason we get no forward progress and they spot it as a 7 yard loss...WHAM +10, Jet sweep +8, Counter, My OC called it wrong, team is confused...we call time out...call it correctly, OC appologizes for the mistake...+1...we let the quarter expire...2nd and goal from the 1. 1st play in the first quarter, Power, TD, kick is good...24-0.

first down, they lose 5, second down, they lose 9...3rd down, they gain 8...4th down, the run the sweep to the big kid, gain of five. Turn over on downs.

We get the ball with 4:46 left...my intention is to get our first downs and get into victory formation...1st down, stretch, +17...then jet sweep, we get called for holding (it was holding) and we lose 8, ISO +5, again, +6...3rd and 9 2:36 to go...we call the fast screen to Y to try and get a managable 4th down to run on...they are pressing the Y...I tell the OC to kill it...he kills it and audibles into trips, slant arrow, and swaps our X and our QB...basically getting them to think run...we almost always run from this formation...slant is wide open, X hits the QB in stride...and he streaks into the end zone...putting us immedaitely into fast clock...we kick the PAT, 32-0, now under a minute on the running clock...I ask if we have to actually kick...the other team answers by lining their team up to shake hands...

In the hand shake line...the head coach does not shake any of our coaches' hands, and when I get to him, he refuses to shake mine...as he is walking away from me he tells me I am classless for throwing the ball on 3rd down while up by 24...and then punctuates it by saying he didn't expect anything else from me...my OC over hears him running his mouth and feels bad about the call...I tell him he didn't do anything wrong...it is not our responsibility to coach his kids coverages or teach his kids how to tackle...he was trying to get the first down so we can get into victory formation...a 4 yard completion turned into a 21 yard TD.

Semi-finals next week, league is giving us lighted practice fields...we have the number 1 seed from our division, who we beat earlier in the season...it is tougher next week...

Semi-Finals...

Good week of practice, had to go inside on Monday as the city closed the grass for reasons unknown to anyone...got two days on the grass and it was cold (by Texas standards). Boys were loose, confident. 3:15 kick off against the number 1 seed. We handed them there only loss earlier in the season, we hung 30 on them, more than any team had in the last 3 seasons.

Do our pre-game ritual, everything is looking good, boys are focused...we lose the toss and they defer, perfect :)

We take the opening kick and start around our own 40...1st and 2nd down we run the ball right at them, gain a few yards....3rd and 7 we call our first pass play of the game...QB looks at the backside fade, X is behind the defense and he hits him in stride...TD at 1:20 in. The block our try, 6-0.

We try onside, they cover it and start around mid field....we turn them away on downs...back to work.

We drive down the field with a mix of run and pass, 1st and goal from the 10...we end up behind the chains after a holding call, 4th and goal from the 17...we are right on the edge of field goal range...I call for the FG team, they trot out there, good snap, good hold the kick is up and good, 34 yard FG 9-0.

We try a squib kick trying to hit a hole in their kick coverage, but we miss it (playing on grass for the first time this season, kicker was struggling with it a bit) and instead he kicks it down the middle of the field. They return to around their 45. A few plays later they get a first down, then lay the ball down, we fall on it, back to work.

We run the ball a few times...just over midfield now. They are in run stop mode now...and they are playing off of Z...we audible to the fade and he runs past the corner, QB hits him in stride...TD...they block the kick, 15-0.

They get the ball back run a few plays and take it to half...talk to the boys, tell them they are doing great, ask them what is going on with the PAT protection, they say they are loading both edges...I tell them to move their feet faster. We adjust a few things in the blocking as they are running TAPs and it confuses the blocking on runs a bit...

We kick off, once again, a squib trying to hit the hole...once again right down the middle, they start around midfield...defense stands tall and they punt. We start around our 25...and go on a soul sapping drive that consumes the rest of the 3rd quarter and ends with us first and goal from the 10. 1st down we get the ball to the 2, second down, we are stopped for no gain. 3rd down we lose two. 4th and goal from the 4...we call power, moving our best runner to F...he is normally our X, he scored from 21 yards out on this exact play last week...they get the play called and line up...there appears to be some confusion, and I am about to call time, but it appears they work it out...so I let them snap it...either the QB opened the wrong way, or the back went the wrong way and the mesh was broken, by the time the get the exchange made, the back side DE (unblocked on power) is in the backfield and makes the tackle for a loss...and somewhere in this narrative, I missed a second half TD the bad guys scored...but at this point the game is 15-6...maybe their opening possession, had to be...regardless....

We turned it over on downs they take over at their own 6...I look at the clock, and think to myself, we are good, a full house T, they cannot score twice with 5:30 left in the game...that is not who they are. They drive down the field....and score with about 1:32 left...they try a kick and we block it...15-12 with the onside kick coming...

They line up to kick...and they are kicking to their sideline...I like that, we have 3 or 4 ball guys over there. They squib it over the front line, it falls in front of our second line, our kid falls on top of it, but never gets his arms around the ball. One of their players reaches under him and pulls it out. They have the ball with 1:29 left, all of their time outs and roughly 45 yards to go...my boys are shaken...so I call a time out...tell them that if they play their assignments, they will be fine ,they cannot score this quickly if we do our jobs....

They apparenty can score that quickly...the score with :48 seconds left on the clock, they convert their PAT 19-15. They get a sideline interfernce call on the TD, so we are recieving the kick from their 35...they kick it deepish...we field it and burn 7 seconds off on the return. Staring at their 39...we gather the offense, tell them we are not done yet...we have :41 seconds, two time outs and everything we need to score...we call a pass play to attack the middle of the field...they are in cover 3. QB drops back, Z is behind the defense in the middle of the field, the QB lets the ball fly...one of the defenders jumps as the ball is arriving and tips it up into the air...and as he is falling to the ground, the ball lands in his lap for the interception...they line up, kneel on it, ball game...

My boys are devestated...we line them up for the hand shake, congratulate the other team, and go to the Dawg pound...

As we are waiting for the cheer squad to arrive, my OC says a few things to the boys...but he is broken up as he is talking, some of the boys are sobbing...my heart is hurting...the cheer squad arrives, and some of them are sobbing as well...we pray it up, then I start talking to them...I had nothing in my mind walking down there, other than "this sucks"...perhaps the post game prayer helped clear my mind and give me the words that I needed...that they needed...I started..."I read something recently...and I have relayed it to you guys recently...we either win, or we learn...if we are doing it right...we did not lose today...we learned, if we do it right..." I spoke for a few more minutes, we broke it out, then the hugs and tears started again...I am blessed to have had the opportunity to coach these boys.
None of them suck, they just haven't found what the kid is good at yet.

That is a heart breaker. Lost a Companionship game a few years back in about the same fashion. I think it made that team stronger.

Thanks for sharing your season. Great run.
