Week 1...

Been an up and down camp leading into week 1. Good practices, terrible practices, QB only wants to throw the ball, so doesn't know the meshes on the run plays, QB discovers that he has to be able to run the ball if we want to throw the ball, learns the meshes...

Last week, we play a practice game in a neighboring city, against a big, fast athletic team, we lose 18-0, but saw a lot of good things, and things to fix...bad thing came out of it, our QB took a hit that resulted in a bruise on his growth plate...good thing, in previous seasons, when he went sideways, team would lay down with him and we would get our teeth kicked in...this did not happen...they kept fighting...

OKay, game week, we have a good physical practice on Monday, minimal brain farts, our starting QB is mainly watching, because his undiagnosed bone bruise is still bothering him. Back up QB taking all the reps...and things are a little sloppy at the mesh, but he is making progress. Wednesday, I get a text from one of my coaches, he and his son are going to leave practice at 6:30 to go watch his other son's MS game (we start at 6:00),unhappy...then at 4:30, I get a text from a dad (divorced household, dad doesn't like to come to bring the boy to practice on his days), text says timmy doesn't feel good, won't be at practice...I reply to the text, I understand, it will affect his playing time on Saturday...dad calls me and says he has the trots, I tell him I understand, he argues with me, I tell him if the boy misses, it will affect his playing time...get to the field talk to coach, tell him if his son leaves at 6:30, it will affect his sons playing time...coach agrees to letting me run the boy to the game right after practice. Trots shows up, go over and talk to dad, he says "I gave him Imodium, now he is constipated, I hope he is okay" I tell him I will keep an eye on him. All the drama done, we have another good practice...this time, the regular QB decides he can take some reps, and he is very sharp...his decision comes after his back up is getting reps and looking much better...best practice of the season thus far...Friday, our walk through gets lightninged out...

Wake up Saturday morning and it is pouring...not a good sign for us...spread team in the pouring rain...show up at the field, the boys show up, pre-game starts, things look pretty good, no problem handing the wet ball, snaps are good, feeling good. Coin toss, we lose, they defer, game on...they kick onside, one of our G's cover it. Time to go to work...1st play, we put the backup in at QB, QB is playing X, we empty out the backfield and run stretch to the trips side, blocking is good, 11 yards, first down. Regular QB in two back set, ISO, 5 yards...Counter, 3 yards. Power, 0 yards, lead and the puller get stuck in the hole somehow. 4th down and 2, we call counter pass...everyone bites hard on the play action, defense collapse and H is wide open in the flat, but the ball falls to the carpet. Turn over on downs...

Defense takes the field, first down they get 5, 2nd down, another 5...1st down..next two plays they go backwards...3 and 14, they complete a 13 yard pass 4th and 1, the convert on 4th down, then they find our ROLB, who for some reason has regressed from last season, will not do his job...they get the ball down to our 22....then through a little pass into the flat on the our right, LB doesn't do his job, and for some reason our CB and Safety cannot get him out of bounds as he tiptoes up the sideline. PAT is blocked we are down 6-0. Next possession we are 4 and out...they go three and out and punt...we go three and out and punt...next series, they beat some more on our right, OLB is doing nothing. They are driving and decide to try the right side...we get good pressure on the QB, QB throws, our Safety breaks on the ball, picks it off and takes it all the way back with 17 seconds until half. PAT is blocked, all tied up 6-6. We kick off they go on offense, we force a punt, they do the same...essentially a defensive battle, until about midway through the 4th quarter...they go on a drive (pounding on our right OLB) and score with about 3 minutes left. PAT good, 14-6. We get the ball and start putting a little something together...we get two quick first downs, then end up in 4th and 1, about 1:45 left. We decide to run the ball on 4th and 1 (we had been throwing the ball on this last drive, and having success)...back side guard wiffs on his block...loss of 3...ball game...

So, thought about what we did in the conditions, went and looked at the film...both G's were bad, being driven into the back field. Then we had the OLB (who is fired, probably moving him to Y), the bad guys found him right away, and ran 2/3 of their plays at him, at he had not one tackle...also saw our receivers were running terrible routes unless they were the primary read...got some stuff to clean up...very happy with the defense (with the exception of the OLB), they had 11 negative plays, a picks six and 3 plays that went for 0 yards. They did give up 6 plays of more than 10 yards, all to the our right...going to work with the G's get their feet moving quicker...fix the route running by the receivers...if we can get a practice in this week...forecast is for rain all week except for Saturday...and the city is very protective of the grass.

Week 2...

City kept closing the grass, apparently to wet...so we had one practice on the grass, two in a parking lot...and...I found out on Wednesday that our MIKE (also our H) was going to miss the game, because he was going to Texas USC...so on top of training up a new OLB for the kid that we fired, I had to train up a new MIKE, which meant I had to train up a Safety, and the kid who got fired had to be trained up to play CB.

the grass practice was pretty good, the two parking lot practices were as good as could be expected....we decided to try and install jet sweep this week, if looked pretty good in practice...we also change our protection for PAT, which we also thought looked pretty good.

Arrived at the field, talked to the crew to verify they would see the toss on the jet sweep as a forward pass, they said they would, as long as it was a toss. Temp was hot, with high humidity, we went through our pregame ritual, prayed it up, ran through the banner, stood for the flag...we won the toss, and took the ball. They tried onside, we covered and started on their 49.

Opened with jet sweep right for 14, tried the left, 0, ran stretch for a loss of one, one 3rd and 11 we picked up 14 on a swing pass to F. Power for 3. Power for 12, tried to throw Dagger, incomplete, fast screen to F TD. Now to see if our new protection would work...it did, up 8-0.

Tried an onside kick, they covered it, so we are on defense. We gave up 2 first downs, then turned them over on downs.

This time, we go on a 14 play drive, starting at our own 33 and stalling on their 23...they get the ball back with 35 seconds, run a couple of plays, halftime.

We try onsides to open the half, and we recover...on their 48. Run jet sweep for 8, then power for 40 and a TD, kick is good. 16-0...because of the point spread now, we cannot kick on sides...ball has to go 20 yards before we can recover...they leave a big open patch of grass, so i signal my kicker to put it in the empty grass...he hits it, but the ball rolls out of bounds...they make us re-kick...they still have the open grass...we kick it there again, and the ball went 17 yards, we recover...with authority, I suggest the ball went 20 yards and is ours...I really must of sold it, because they awarded us the ball...we were at the LOS, before they decided it only went 17...back to defense.

We turn them over on downs...get the ball back. Stretch for 9, Power for 7, jet sweep for 5, Play action pass for 7, veer for 1, jet sweep for a bunch...but we accidentally chopped the DE. we are now 2nd and 19...they are in cover 3, so we decide to run All Go, QB throws a beautiful ball to X and X makes a wonderful catch in the end zone, kick is good, 24-0.

Still the open patch of grass, we try and hit it again, ball goes out of bounds, they make us re-kick again...still the open grass...we keep it in bounds and almost recover...they netted 2 yards making us re-kick, but they got the ball...defense....first play, they throw the ball, long gain, 1st down. Then they decide to try something different. The put a kid slow as creeping death, but pushin 200 pounds. The run the ball to him 2 times in a row, and he mows through the middle of our defense...then they fake it to him and naked boot...that play we bottle up. then they hand it to hiim 3 more times and they score, we block their kick.

They try onsides, we cover, back to work...except we put together a terrible drive...4 and out...they come out in the same set with the big back...and fumble, we recover... 2:00 left in the game, I tell my OC that we will not be calling any time outs (we had all 3), he can call plays and work hurry up, but without time outs..1st down counter for 5. jet sweep, 37 yards, jet sweep or 3 yards, the boys are hurrying to the line, 2nd and goal from the 10, slant/arrow...thrown into the end zone...just a little too tall for Z...incomplete, ball game...

Our new OLB played really well, physically, had 6 or 7 tackles, 2 or 3 for loss...one issue solved. the new protection scheme we put in for PAT was really good. and jet sweep worked really well. We had 3 penalties, procedure on two of the kicks and the chop block...have to figure out a way to communicate to the backfield when we are cutting on the oline, we don't want anyone hurt. MIKE is back next week, so our defense is back at full strength, playing a pretty nice team that also won today to even their record at 1-1. Looking forward to it.

Week 3...

I think someone moved Texas to the Amazon rain forest...we did get two practices on the grass, City closed it on Friday, so no walk through...raining all day Saturday, watching the weather, weather man says we should get a break from about 6 to 9, our kick off is at 6:45. We got a break from about 6 to 7, then it starts raining sideways...

We win the toss and take the ball....we go on a 9 play drive that ends on an incomplete pass that hit the Z in the chest....defense. The bad guys have this really big back, at least 6 foot tall, probably around 150 pounds...first play they hand it to him and he goes 81 yards....but wait...illegal block in the back...net of 31. 4 plays later (3,24,9 and 14) they are in the endzone. Boys are hesitant to hit the big back...their kick is good. 8-0 bad guys.

We get the ball back. Jet sweep for 10, jet sweep for 3, we see something weird in their coverage, they have everything rolled to the right, don't think they can cover the left, so we call all go from empty on 2nd and 7,  QB hits X in stride...35 yard TD. Kick is good. 8-8. We see a hole in the kick coverage, I show it to the kicker and the two outside guys on the coverage team...oppossing coach doesn't adjust to my non-discrete hand signals...kicker puts it in the spot, ball gets jumped on, squirts out, we recover on their 34. We run stretch for 2, incomplete on a fast screen...and decide that the coverage anomoly is still there, run all go from Ace, X "Mosses" the corner, shakes the tackle, 32 yard TD, kick is good, 16-8 good guys.

Defense...they run the big kid for 3, then for 2, then our tiniest player, who we have playing DE (because he does his job) hits the big kid in the backfield for a loss...force them to punt. we get the ball back on our 45. Strech for 16, ISO for 19, ISO for 5, incomplete pass, the a false start, stretch for 6, we call time out and trot our FG unit on the field for a 30 yard try...they block it...they get the ball back with about 30 seconds left in the half...and they decided to kneel on it.

Half time, they go into the restroom to get out of the rain, we stay in the rain, talk to them about what we need to do in the second half...watch the Dawgettes do their half time thing, do a little warm up (high knees and what like that) to get their blood flowing...time to go to work...oh and it is raining harder...

We kick thet cover it start at their 41, 3 yards to the big kid, 3 yards to the big kid, then they run a lead sweep with the fast kid, the big kid buries my OLB, and he out runs everyone, 53 yards for the TD. Kick is good, all tied up again...

First down stretch for 9 yards, Power for 7 yards, power for 3 yards, counter for 0...3 and 7 from their 32...we try and throw the ball, looks like both the corner and Z catch it, corner pulls it away from Z and they have the ball on thier own 15. They run 5 plays and punt...jet sweep for 8, stretch for 6 counter for 2, stretch for 8, false start, power for 3 incomplete pass, muffed snap that turns into a sack, then an incomplete pass. Turn over on downs.

On first down, we jump off sides...so 1st and 5....we get them to 4th and 2...they try and get us to jump on 4th, and they jump instead, decide to punt. We get the ball back, with 2 time outs left and about a minute to go...I tell my OC to call power...we had success with it, and don't thing the bad guys expect it...power for 8, time out...fast screen to X, he picks up 12 and gets out of bounds....we throw All go twice to end regulation...

Overtime...each team gets a series from the 20...we win the toss on go on Defense. First down, they get one with the big kid, second down, they run the power sweep they scored on in the 3rd quarter, they get 15, 1st and goal inside the 5. they go with the big kid, -1, big kid again, -3, big kid one more time, they get 2. 4th and goal from the 8, they try a FG, not sure if it was blocked or if he just shanked it, but he misses badly...our turn...

Power for 7, Power for 7, then we muffed a snap and lost 3. Power for 0, then we tried a fast screen that fell incomplete. 4th and goal...we take our TO and gather the FG team, tell the holder to bring the block and extra yard away from the LOS...they go out and kick a 26 yarder for the win!

Week 4...

Divisional Play started...we have the undefeated team tied for 1st place in our division, and they have not surrendered a point yet...we got two practices on the grass leading into this game, worked the boys hard on blocking a 33 stack...talk to the boys pre-game, they want the ball if we win the toss...we win the toss.

Come out on offense, they are not in their stacks...they are in a 53, okay, that makes life easier...we run stretch for 4, then a fast screen for 1, we decide to run slant wheel and some pretty good coverage breaks up the pass, but we saw that the middle of the field is wide open when we go into trips, so we decide to do it again...4th and 5, boys come to the line in trips, and both of my slots line up on...I am shouting for them but they don't hear me, the ball is snapped, QB sees the MOFO, throws a terrible pass that is caught by one of the slots, he makes a couple of people miss, TD, but I already know the flag is on the filed...it comes back...we are confident that we can pick up the first on 4th and 10...we call dagger out of trips...for some reason my QB checks down to the F coming out of the backfield, he gains 5 and turn over on downs...

The bad guys run a full house T, power, power sweep, counter...they run tree plays, 4th and 2...defense comes up big...turns them over on downs.

Back to work...we formation them, twins, trips, empty, two back sets...counter for 7, stretch for 3, stretch for 11, stretch for 4, power for 6, jet sweep for 7, defense is on their heels, they have no idea what is coming, we go to slant arrow, 22 yards and a TD, we miss the kick (pushed it wide)...6-0

Defense, we force them to punt...back to work...we run counter and get caught in the backfield for a loss of 2, All Go falls incomplete, we run it again and pick up 10, on 4th and 2, they stop us for no gain on power...they take over at our 40...first down they get 7, second down 13...they try and pass, pressure is too much they throw it incomplete with a dlineman wrapped around him...then they run counter for the first time, our boys over pursue and big hole in the Defense...TD, they try for two, incomplete...6-6.

Recover their onside try, first down, lets run slant arrow again, complete and our guy is off to the races, he is going to score, except their corener decides to try a soccer slide tackle...which gets him a flag for USC...after the penalty is administered, we get the ball at the five, we run power and score, kick is good. 14-8.

They net 10 yards on 3 plays, and hit us with counter again (we over pursued again), 42 yards and a TD, their try fails again, 14-12. 54 seconds until the half...we line up to receive the kick...they plan on pinning us deep, kick it deep, ball fielded at our 34, and we bring it up the field, returner gets surrounded at our 45 bad guys trying to bring him down, he keeps driving his feet, pops out of the pile at their 48 and hits the sideline with two guys to beat...one of his team mates is running with him, turns and stands in front of one of the bad guys, slows him down returner outruns the other guy to the end zone...kick is good, 22-12.

They run 3 plays before half, on the last one, there is some pushing and shoving...flags fly...i figure there is going to be offsetting USC...white hat comes over and say we have a double disqualification for fighting...they lost a RB, we lost a G...which was a big deal for us...at halftime, we scramble to replace the G...grab our Y and coach him up in the 8 minute half...

We open the half and execute a perfect onside kick, drop it between their 1st and 2nd line, and our guys fields it on the hop...we stole a possession...we go to slant arrow twice and the passes fall in complete, we stry jet sweep...4th and 10 we decided to punt it to them, takes a bad bouce for us and the net change was only 15 yards...but, defense stand tall and forces them to punt the ball back to us. We get the ball back with about 2 minutes left in the third quarter.

We try power, nothing, jet sweep gets us 4, 3rd and 6 we run stretch, get the first down, but wait...holding...on the last play of the third quarter we pick up 9 on 3rd and 16 on slant arrow. start of the 4th we go right back to it...and pick up 13...new set of downs and the clock is still turning. We line up for power, we see a hole in the defense, we kill the play and are about to send in the other, when my center hears someone clap (someone on the defense) and snaps the ball, hit the QB, luckily my F was alert and falls on the ball. We run zone read, QB pulls it and picks up 3, we call slant wheel, QB goes back side to the fade, and just out of reach...but we see the middle of the field is wide open...4th and 9 from the 25...we go slant wheel out of trips...one of our slots improvises...and runs a post route, because he saw the middle of the field open, QB sees him there and lets it fly...one of the defenders trying to catch up...takes our slot down before the ball got there...pass interference, and apparently one of the defensive players told the official "that's a terrible call" Earned another USC penalty...and after everything was administered, we had 1st and goal from the 6.  We emptied the back filed and ran QB stretch for 4, then stretched to the F for the TD, kick is good...30-12.

We gave them the ball back with less than five minutes left...not really sure why, but the defense is not playing aggressively anymore, they take the ball down the field, score with 1:12 left and convert their try. 30-20. They try the onside kick, we recover, get into victory formation, two snaps and ball game.

The loss of the G was big, in the second half, we tried to run the ball times and netted 11 yards...

3 and 1 now...boys now believe they can beat anyone...have to manage that, they still have to prepare...next week, not any easier we play the other team who was tied for 1st place, they are still undefeated...and have shut out three of their 4 opponents...

After I break down the film, I always go back and watch it to see the reaction from the other teams side line...makes me chuckle sometimes :)

Week 5...

Playing the only undefeated team left...but we have some challenges to deal with first...in last weeks victory, we had a G disqualified for fighting...I petitioned the league to let him play this week, as he wasn't really fighting, just some pushing and shoving after the whistle. They said okay, but he will miss the first 4 possessions (combined, 2 on O and 2 on D). So now I have to train up a G to start the game. My fault, I should have had this done sooner...but now I have to :) Hold a competition between one of my DTs and my Y, they both want the job...DT does some stuff well, Y does some different stuff well....in the end, I go with Y, that said, most of my attention is with these two boys this week in practice and I let something else slip...more on that later...

So we are playing the self proclaimed "baddest" team in the league...night cap, under the lights...aside from the G try out, we had a good week of practice...we are ready for them...I know they are anxious about us...but they are fast...and athletic...and fast...we think we can pound them between the tackles...we win the toss and elect to receive...

We return their deep kick to their 42 and time to go to work...we call WHAM...and it hits fast and we get 5 yards, but my back is holding the ball like a loaf of bread...and they take it from him...defense...they go on offense, and they show us how fast they are...they get the ball down to the 2 after running 8 plays with 3 of them over 10 yards...1st and goal...they try their toss sweep to show us how fast they are again...our OLB is on top of the back when the ball arrives and he knocks it to the turf....our CB falls on it...1st down on the 5.

Back to work...we run WHAM again, get 5 and our back holds onto it. Power for 3...then we run a play action pass that looked really good in practice, but under game conditions it takes about a week and a half to develop...the QB gets the ball back to the LOS and he is tackled...4th and 2...the OC looks at me, I decide to go for it (in hindsight, probably a terrible idea), we call power and gain 1 yard and give them the ball on the 13 going in...

1st down, they get 3., second down, incomplete...third down, they try the outside on the other side (where my best OLB plays) and he buries the back for a 4 yard loss...3rd and 11 from the 14 and the first quarter ends...switch ends...they throw a little pass to the flat...my QB has the opportunity to tackle him or knock him out of bounds short of the first down, instead he turns his shoulders and lets him walk into the end zone...kick good, 8-0 bad guys.

They decide kicking to our returners is a bad idea, so they try onside...my Y (new G) falls on it at the 50. Time to go to work. Swing pass for 5, Dagger for 6, another Swing for 8. We try veer, stuff for no gain. ISO for 3, counter for 5, counter again for 2. 3rd and 3 from the 21, slant/arrow and my Z drops it, if he catches it, a 1st down for sure, and maybe a TD. I tell my OC to call it again to the other side...we empty it out and the bad guys call time. In the time out, OC calls SLUGO to the other side...they jump the slant and X breaks up field, QB puts the ball on him no one between him and the end zone, and he drops it...turn over on downs.

Defense comes out forces them to punt on 4th and 11...and a terrible punt...it goes 6 yards...we take over on the 26...slant/wheel, another drop...power for 5, jet sweep for 12, stretch for 4, 1st and goal on the 9. We are in TO, tell X to run a fade and H to run a post...both of them are open, but the QB throws the fade, TD. Kick goes wide right...8-6. About 40 seconds until half. We kick it deepish...they get the ball on the 29...1st and 2nd down they throw the ball incomplete. 3rd down, they try and throw again and the pressure gets there, sack, I call my final time out with about 20 seconds left (lost about 11 seconds because my time keeper was checking facebook or something...)force them to punt from the 25 yard line on 4th down...they punt it a little better (actually a lot better)...and we call poison...its rolling down the field and comes to a stop with about 3 seconds...but the officials do not blow the whistle until the horn sounds...half time.

Talk to the boys at half time, tell them to clean up the mistakes and we can get these guys...no more business decisions on Defense...tackle them.

They cover our onside KO at midfield...first down, a run for 6. Second down, they hit the swing to the back out of the backfield and he tears off 31 before my safety runs him down. They try and and run, pick up 5, then throw the same pass agains and score...kick good...16-6.

They pooch kick it to us, we field it and return it to our 44...we are getting ready to go out on offense, when a board member comes up and says, we are watching the lightning...if it gets within 15 miles we are calling it. Its within 30 right now, I tell him thanks, but it is actually 10 miles...my OC overheard it...and gets anxious...and tells the boys we are going to pick up the pace...we throw three straight incomplete passes and for some reason my QB has developed happy feet...we punt the ball to them...our gunner is tearing down the field and hits the returner as soon as he touches the ball....the ball hits the carpet and my gunner falls on it...but the official had blown the whistle as soon as my guy hit him...he missed that the ball was never secured...I tell him that the ball was never secured and my guy got it...he says neither of them secured it...and so I asked...why did you blow the whistle then...no answer...back to defense.

They run 5 plays that result in them having to pun the ball back to us...we are now getting updates every 2 minutes it seems...the other coach is taking his time milking the clock (which I understand)....they punt the ball back to us with 45 seconds left in the 3rd quarter...and it is a heck of a punt...from their 37 to our 14...first down...happy feet...incomplete...2nd down, slant wheel, complete for 5, 3rd and 5, we call All Go...and I have no idea whatsoever what my QB saw...last play of the 3rd quarter...he has two receivers open, on on each side of the field...but he holds the ball too long...and gets pressure so he slings the ball into the middle of the field off of his back foot, and it is picked...and returned to the 4. We start the 4th quarter on D...

1st down...run for 0. 2nd down...run the other way, my safety meets him at the one, but his momentum carries them into the end zone as they fall. 22-6 kick pending...they line up for the kick and kick it, I think there was a flag on the play, but the board says, the lightning is within 10 miles...game is called with 7:30 something left in the game...we either lost 22-6 or 24-6...

We made too many mistakes, coaching mistakes and physical mistakes by the players...we physically beat them...but the mistakes killed us...and the swing pass and not getting the coverage adjustment in during practice leading into the game...this one is on me...back to work...3 games left to make the playoffs :)

None of them suck, they just haven't found what the kid is good at yet.

Could the QB suddenly having happy feet have any relation to the fact the your OC seemed to get happy feet of his own in telling the offense that they needed to pick up the pace?  An example of the players emotions reflecting the coaches?  It sounds like your QB may have been trying to win the game in one play or something.

I agree...I talked to the OC over the weekend...and he acknowledged his mistake...
