Game 1
« on: September 08, 2018, 08:17:14 PM »
So we played our first game of the season today.  And I woke up this morning to all kinds of Parent/Player/DaddyBall drama.  (What's youth football without parent drama?)  The Defensive Coordinator decided to quit this morning and take his son with him (his son was our starting DE/TE).  He was also the starting QB last year.  (But not this year.). Anyhoos, Dad quits and takes his son with him.

I get to the game field on a blazing hot day, where rain is in the forecast.  We receive the opening kick and have little trouble getting down the field and racking up 6 points right away.  We attempt to kick the XP but it's blocked so we're up 6-0.  They come right back out of the Single Wing running essentially two plays, Power and Wedge and they can run the heck out of Power.  They come down the field and score, but don't get their XP so we're tied at 6.  We go down the field again and score another TD, making it 12-6 and kick the XP, making it 14-6.  We're able to stop them on the next possession.  We both trade a couple more possessions, but we finally get in the red zone before the half, but don't score.  In the 2nd Half, they score a TD and close the gap to 14-12.  They convert the XP, making it 14-13 us.  We move down the field again, and our Fullback gets down to their 5-yard line.  He gets tackled but breaks his arm and is lost for the season.  We punch it in, making the score 20-13, needing the XP to take a 2-score lead.  We try to run it in to give us an 8-point lead, but get stopped.  With 4 minutes left, they take their final possession down the field and score a TD with 20 seconds remaining in the game.  With the score 20-19, they convert the XP tying the game at 20.  Our starting QB gets hurt on our final defensive series (he plays CB) and we are without the backup QB because the Daddyballer Defensive Coordinator took him off the team.  So we plug in a WB at QB, tell him to take the snap, take a knee and run out the clock to go into overtime.  In overtime, we tell WB (the new QB) to run a QB Wedge on the first play.  He gets 5 yards.  On 2nd and goal, we run a Fullback Wedge and get 2 more.  On 3rd Down, the QB runs a sweep for a TD, giving us the lead at 26-20.  The WB/QB is also our kicker and he kicks the XP giving us an 8-point lead and effectively sealing the game.  Our opponent gets the ball and scores a TD, making the game 28-26, but they need a kick to tie.  They can't, their kick fails and we win the game, 28-26.

Afterwards, we find out that our header is suspended for 1 game for scheduling a scrimmage this past week with the opponent that we were rained out with in Week 1.  Evidently, the scrimmage was not cleared through the league commissioner so he gets to sit out this week.  I was just named the new head coach.  Welcome back to Pop Warner.
