First game is at 9 a.m. sharp on Saturday. An hour earlier than our normal start time. Hopefully our players aren't effected by the early start time. Going to be a tough game but one we should win. We have the more athletic team but they are well coached and get better as the season goes. I am glad to play them early in the season.

Game 2  18-6 "W"

Defense won this one 2 Pick 6's and One called back for Roughing the Passer.  We still struggle to be able to read the defense and adjust on the LOS.  ON ME!  X and Y need to work on Route Running. Still weak on the discipline.  They were bringing 7 or 8, we need to be able to get the ball out there ASAP. Had one sent
to the Hospital.  In a neck brace now.  No Concussion, however, some stretched ligaments.  That part is NEVER "fun".  He was part of a QB Sammich and he and the QB did not get up.  I HATE WHEN KIDS GET INJURED!

Keep plowing forward.  Keep adjusting.  Cause that's what we do.

Game one in the books 7-0 victory. Ran a total of 12 plays on offense. Ran one play the entire first half which was our only TD. Had two TDs called back on us in 2nd half for blocks in the back. Men played a great game just was dog tired at the end. 14 kids with 9 playing both sides. Made me proud and looking forward to week two.

I love it! And thank you sir.

My favorite one is probably the one where the corner ran right by the guy w/ the ball. Comedy.

People complain about talent, then dont concentrate on fakes, despite the fact faking takes no talent & is equal to AT LEAST 2 blocks if done well.

We won game 1 6-0. We scored on the first drive and couldn't do anything after that. Defense ruled the day. Thank goodness we tackle every practice. We won because we tackled better than the other team.

Jambo vs mediocre team. We won 47-14.

I've been through every one of these clips more than once.  Jake, to say that your opponent was "mediocre" is being generous.  They just flat out weren't very good.  However, the difference in the two teams didn't appear to be talent, but coaching.  I can't see how you're able to get a team to look that much like a finished product so early in the season.  The thoroughness of the coaching on your team is evident.  Details have not been overlooked; if anything it's looks like the details have been your focus.  New coaches should look at the blocking and fakes to see what can be accomplished this early in the season.  I don't recall ever having coached a youth team that looked so complete at this stage.  I'll hope that others can use this as a teaching tool to see what can be done not only at this age group, but so early in the season.

Wow, thanks Dave. Very high praise!

I guess I just meant mediocre compared to what ive seen at this level. Which is just plain awful. Its really hard to guage teams at this level.

I have a great O-line coach that really gets the system. That helps a TON.

We definitely have a lot of talent & smart kids. So that helps.

All that said, ive been watching this level years & planning what id do if I ever coached that level again. I really believed we could do most of the stuff we do at the JV level w/ the little guys, as long as we set our sights high from the beginning. We installed the system almost the exact same way we do at the JV level.

After running our system for this long, I know exactly what I need to get what it is were looking for. A lot of trial & error. Theres just certain phrases, key words & coaching points that ive learned, that can literally trim a week off an install.

Ive also tried to tackle many of the myths ive heard at this level. You cant run trap cuz the defender doesnt come up field fast enough. So, we run tackle trap instead of guard trap, which allows the defender to get further up field. Cant get young kids to fake well. Wrong. Cant get the QB to ride a mesh. Wrong. Cant toss rocket outside the DE. Wrong. We pull guards & TEs.

Even on D, our guys learn the techniques & gaps no problem. Something many think is too complicated. Frankly, I think they thrive on the structure. Theres no ambiguity. Everything is very clear, what & where theyre supposed to be.

Honestly, the hardest part of coaching this level is the drills. Im so used to the kids understanding how to rotate & hold bags & all that stuff. The little guys literally need like a map & someone to hold their hand to the next rotation. If you watched some of our drill disasters this year youd think I was a 1st year coach. lol

Anyhow, thanks again.

Wow, thanks Dave. Very high praise!

--You know I only shoot straight from the hip, Jake.

Its really hard to guage teams at this level.

--Indeed, it is.

We definitely have a lot of talent & smart kids.

--Doesn't matter, if you don't know what to do with them.  You and your staff obviously do.

All that said, ive been watching this level years & planning what id do if I ever coached that level again.

--I went away from that.  My focus has been on high school ball for so long, that I'm wondering about my adjusting to youth and even what that adjustment would entail.

We installed the system almost the exact same way we do at the JV level.

--I can believe that.  Our installs are for the most part, identical.

Theres just certain phrases, key words & coaching points that ive learned, that can literally trim a week off an install.

--This, this, this ^ ALL DAY LONG.  That's an excellent point.  While you need to have read the novel, you'd better have the Cliff Notes memorized.  Many coaches don't understand that learning your own Cliff Notes version of what you run from drills/scheme/install is essential.

So, we run tackle trap instead of guard trap, which allows the defender to get further up field.

--That is golden advice.  We've always been a Guard Trap team.  Now I've learned from you the advantage of running Tackle Trap.

Frankly, I think they thrive on the structure. Theres no ambiguity. Everything is very clear, what & where theyre supposed to be.

--I agree and it's called "knowing how to teach."

Honestly, the hardest part of coaching this level is the drills. Im so used to the kids understanding how to rotate & hold bags & all that stuff.

--I get that.  Talking to a 9-year-old isn't like talking to a high school kid, especially in terms of gaining feedback.

If you watched some of our drill disasters this year youd think I was a 1st year coach.

--Hmmm.  I've been wondering the same thing about my practices and why my first practice yesterday with a middle school team went better than a 20th practice with a youth team.

Thanks for the video and the explanations.  Very helpful stuff.  I always get amped about seeing a well-coached team.

PHEW!

WEIRD game. We won 14-12. Frankly should have been more like 45-30. Really chaotic game. Where to begin?

Officiating: Worst officiatated game ive seen in all my years of coaching. Absolutely insane. We had a side judge that was cussing on the field & punking the white hat into making ridiiculous calls.
Almost every big run we had got called back. I seriously have no idea how many penalties we had, but it was a lot. They didnt keep a play clock. So other team would sometimes take up to 2 minutes to run a play. Which kept our offense off the field, and helped  caused MAJOR MPR issues for us.

1st drive we fumbled & lost the ball on the 2nd play.

2nd drive we had to score 3 times in order to get points on the board. I told the refs before the game, please gave a late whitle. Cuz youll get fooled by our fakes. They ALL dismissed me. So, 1st time we run Belly sweep, what do you think happened? They blew it dead on the dive fake while our back was running for a TD.
We run buck sweep, it gets called back after our guard flat backed the corner on a kickout block. The ref tried to tell me you have to EXTEND YOUR ARMS ON ALL BLOCKS. WTF???? He confused the crack back block rule w/ all blocks???
Then we finally got the TD. I dont even remember what we scored on. I was beyond furious at this point. Took everything I had not to lose my ****.

They missed on some passes that would have been TDs, so we caught some breaks there for sure. But the game just continued w/ penalty after penatly on us. We wound up 14-0 at the half, but thanks to all the MPR issues & continued penalties,we just could not punch it in again.

Anyhow, ugly game. But theyre probably the best team well face this year. So well take it & try to learn from it.

Game 3.  Starting Tail Back/DE out with Neck Injury.  Starting Slot/WB/ OSLB out family thing.  His "Back up" Safety gone, same reason.  2 practices to replace them All on both sides of the ball.  1 practice O one D. Defense had very little let down, 3 forced Fumbles (not take aways), 3 sacks, multiple tackles for Loss.

HOWEVER, we were staring ourselves in the mirror.  Their D forced similar things on us.  Tail Back, QB, and WB got popped one the same play. 2 bloody noses and Helmet to the Kidneys.  I can honestly say we did not practice for The MASH unit effect.  "The Fickle Finger Of Fate" (Rowan and Martin Laugh In reference) was squarely upon us. Passes that were open Missed.  Holes so wide my fat arse could get through them, missed. Backfield blocks whiffed.

All that and I am Pissed Off at ME.  I let them down, I failed to prepare them for the worst.  At the same time, I could not be more proud of them! Kids stepped up and filled roles as I asked them to.  They didn't complain or cry over spilt milk.  They lined up and gave me their best effort. Many tears at the end.  What eats at me is the fact that One Play made the difference.  I could not come up with one play to off set it.

Final Score 6-0 Loss.

This will eat at my ass all weekend!

We right now are a shotgun based offense and our starting center and unfortunately only center(original starting center was pulled off the team for behavior issues) missed the game due to unknown reasons. So we put a new kid at center and he can't shotgun snap so we move UTC. And it was ugly. Doesn't help they have a really good defensive line ether. To be honest, we might have struggled against air this game, it was that bad. Thankfully our defense is stout and we had a stalemate and ended in a 0-0 tie in triple OT. In a good note, I was able to find a center who could shotgun it, just found him too late in the game for it to matter. I guarantee if we had him to start the game, there is a different result. Oh well, we are now 1-0-1 and on to next week and then a bye.

3-0. Won 44-24. All points all were scored on our all sub D. One of those games where our subs probably out-snapped our starters. Or it was at least close.

Because were seeing so many A,B,D fronts, weve added Veer to our offense. We run it from our base Wing T formations, & from Dead T (Power T, Straight T, whatever you wanna call it). We run Veer dive, Veer keep, & double dive (both ways). No option. We could probably do it, but not worth the time imo. Really is crazy how effective it is. We scored on our 1st play w/ it, & have gouged both teams weve run it against. Still a lot to refine, but its pretty nasty vs all these 6 man fronts.

Weve hit 3 or 4 TDs passes this year. Were 3-3 on PAT. 2 things that from what I can tell at this level, will really set us apart.

Were now pretty proficient at:

Belly series
Buck series
Down Series
Jet Series
Veer

The only thing left id like to add is double wing super power. I cant imagine running anything else after that. Maybe a couple gadget plays, but were pretty much maxed out.

Ill post video soon.
