We won 16-0 today against an inferior opponent. We have tons of things to still work on. If we play our next game like we played today, we will lose. Can't count on the defense to pitch a shut out every game. Got to get better with our snaps.

Won 32-0 against an opponent that really isn't worth talking about.  There were only 11 of them that showed up for the game and they were very poorly coached. They ran a 'Sorta Wing-T/Sorta Dead T' offense.  Basically, the only thing they got right were the formations.  The only time that they gained any yards or, made a first down was against our hodgepodge defensive personnel. We literally had anybody that wanted to go in playing almost any defensive position that they wanted to play.  Having said that, I'm still pretty sure that they ended their day in negative yardage.
Their defense started as a 4-4 but, they switched to a 5-2 or 5-3 or, both.  Didn't matter. They couldn't stop anything.  Why do some coaches think that changing a formation is a substitute for actually teaching defense?  Their team did have some athletes- but, no one extraordinary.  I guess they figured they'd win on talent alone.  Anyway... at least we found areas where we can improve.

Well 4 of our next 5 games are against really good teams. Going to be tough.

I have flight from Raleigh that's supposed to leave at 6 am Friday.  My weekend plans are probably screwed.

Tough year so far, we knew it would be a challenge with a number of kids leaving for full commitment to other sports.  Lost top CB, DE/TE, both our QB's sized up to JV, 4 new kids to football and our line is small and inexperienced.  We sit at 0-2, having lost 22-0 to a perennial Disney team and just lost yesterday to a much improved but usual doormat 8-0.  It's a rough feeling having not been on the losing side much since starting 6 years ago.

OLine not drive blocking, we have good skill players but they cant get far before getting gang tackled.  Probably going to have to reallocate resources.  My son is FB and our wingback will probably both have to move to guard to sure up the line.  That will help some and not leave us super vulnerable but we have MPP requirements of 10 plays so we still have to put the others back in until they potentially improve.

On a side note, trash talking is a part of the game and I get that.  We coach our kids to keep their mouth shut, win or lose.  Respect the game, the coaches, your opponent and the refs.  That being said you cant control your opponents mouths.  Understandably, yesterdays loss was a big win for a team that has never beaten us but their kids were screaming you lose, you suck etc.  Their coaches seemed to rather encourage it.  I told our kids, if you don't like it beat em.  Youre gonna play classless teams, shut em up by winning.  My question though as coaches, what is your protocol on keeping your kids respectable?  Im sure we all have a few stories to share on the experience.

We discourage trash talk, but I wouldn't go so far as to say we don't tolerate it. Respect is a 2 way street and I've never seen our guys initiate it. We take very few unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. That was with the older kids. We probably let it go too far last Spring and the coaches fed into it. If we were crushing a team and they responded by being dirty and talking trash . . .

Not proud of that and will play it differently the next time around. Some of Dave Cisar's words actually resonated with me. Also, it bothered me to learn that a former parent and high level referee looked at me (us) as part of the problem. It turns out that I actually do care what people think of me. Imagine that.

If the opponent was respectful and played with honor, our guys were always cool.

2nd graders? Trash talk means telling someone they're a "poopy head".

I just tell them to take it out on the guy they are responsible for, on the next play. Stay focused and don't be a selfish ball player. If you get an unsportsmanlike penalty, you will be sitting. Matter of fact I had it happen this past game. We called the same play, just so he could get the opportunity to get the same guy. One of the opposing coaches was flagged. He started telling his team to rip our kids to the ground by the facemask. 2 15 yard facemask penalties in a row, then we throw an interception. We get the ball back and he tells them to do it again, ref threw the flag, had some words, then one of there players was tossed from the game. Our QB scored an extra point and there kid late hit to the head of our QB as he was getting up. Only 50 seconds left in the game, but they decide to not take the field and forfeited.

OLine not drive blocking

--They aren't drive blocking, or they just aren't very good at drive blocking?  There's a big difference.

On a side note, trash talking is a part of the game and I get that.

--It shouldn't be.

what is your protocol on keeping your kids respectable?

--Everything you just said that you already do.  You're modeling behavior for your players and teaching them the right way.  Unfortunately, too many "adults" (especially in this sport) seem to have either forgotten, or never learned anything about sportsmanship.  They see TV shows where the deal is see who has the "funnier" insult. ::)

--Just keep on doing what you're doing, in that regard.

Why is trash talking a part of the game?  If you consider it a part of the game, do you practice it?

He is one of that orgs league rep. He may not be coaching anymore after that game. I wouldn't let him, but it is up to the league.
