JV Football
« on: October 04, 2018, 10:31:34 PM »
Went to see the EWHS JV team play tonight.  They lost, 50-6.  One of my players from last year wasn't out there, so I texted his dad asked how he was doing.  This was his reply:

"Coach, this means a lot you checking in on him.  I tell people all the time about how every Sunday u called and checked on him and how his week went academically and how we would talk about academics and not speak one word about football.  You guys have a special respect from me, Coach.  And when I say it's a total 180 this year it's sad.  I pray they bring you guys back and give you total control.  It blows me away how they let a winning program just walk away and have brought in what they brought in."

That's rough when it's 50-6...

It floored me to think that this even happens

Most of us knew this would happen.
Sucks for EVERYONE involved

Here's a text Coach W and I received this morning from another parent:  "Sad, sad what we witnessed last night.  Very hard to stay positive.  Thanks for staying around.  There's no words to describe how completely pathetic what I hear from (my son) after he comes home from practice what is said by these clowns for coaches.  (My son) said last night "You know Dad, we would run through walls for Coach Potter and Coach Williams because we believed in them and the system they coached and knew they cared for us.  We practiced a ton but didn't care because we were all in and knew they cared about us."  Wanted to share that with you 2.  I thought it was a huge compliment to both of you."

I share this here, because it echoes what I've said about relationships, creating an atmosphere and caring about your players.  This part resonated the most with me: "We practiced a ton but didn't care because we were all in and knew they cared about us."

Tito, I keep up with all the schools I've coached at.  I only post about this situation because parents continue to reach out.  I'm over it, past it, and done with it.  I'm not going back.  The school's not going to offer me again, nor would I take it.  I post the texts to show the level of relationships that you can have with not only players, but especially parents.  And too many coaches don't value the relationships that coaches can have with parents.  I happen to.  And I think it's something worthwhile that all coaches should pursue.

Relationships always come in handy.

I got offered my Varsity DC job because the team had hired a DC who then no-showed practice at the start of the season. A mother whose son I had coached in youth ball a few years before went to the HC and offered him my number. He called we spoke, I was hired.

She was a pain in my ass when her son was a 6th grader. But I always treated her respectfully and she saw how much I cared for the kids so i just happened to be the coach she recommended when though he had played for other coaches with a better record than we had that year.
