My Season
« on: November 09, 2018, 05:59:08 PM »
I rarely post in season
Really satisfying and fun season this year

Played in the single grade- big boys division

Before season started we lost 4 two way starters
130 lb ISLB/RG moved to Cali
140 lb OT/DT moved to Cali- twins
Arguably our 2 most physical players
100 lb DE and Power Tackle- really tough wrestler- unquestioned team leader- great effort, toughness, leadership- Moved about 45 miles away
90 lb WB  CB who was our run threat at QB- we alternated this player at QB when we needed a legit run threat wide- Probably our 2nd fastest kid- athlete. Seperated shoulder in baseball late- sat out

We added in
Backup QB who played for us 2 years ago moved to AZ  and moved back- small, athletic- was EXTREMELY undersized LB for us- started and backup QB
Lineman 115 lbs- was MPR in a program in Lincoln- he ended up contributing at DE, DT, PT and TE- due to injuries

Lost opener 20-0  halftime was 0-0 with 4 minutes left 8-0, we threw pick six, they deep directional kick and score with a minute left- League champs, much bigger and faster than us
game played in pouring rain
Had 3 turnovers- 2 picks and the onside kick

Lost week 2 28-18  this team lost 2 games in season- really tough RB- passed really well- game played in rain. Lost 2 pics and a perfectly executed onside kick that took a funky bounce
Then we went on a 6 game win streak
Averaging about 45 ppg
Two games we came from behind at the half to win against tough teams with big, strong physical backs
Made a few defensive adjustments at the half

Lost best backup lineman- to throat surgery thing- nothing to do with football
Starting RG/DT out 2 games with cracked bone in toe

WOn a CRAZY cold windy wet game an hour away
Without our starting RTE and DE- broken bone in foot
BEst CB/ starting WB  big play returner out- sick
Starting OLB- backup QB shows up at the kickoff- they said he was too sick- played defense only- no special teams
Stomped a good physical team with really talented big RB-
Big puddles of water everyone in parkas

Difference-
SLOWLY but surely we went from our bigger playbook to a smaller one with quite a few adjustments and formation tweaks
We threw more efficiently- after game 2 we only had 2 Ints the rest of the season
Better work by our QB on choosing targets- running- we worked it a TON

Last year I think he threw 18 TD and maybe 5 Ints
This year maybe 15 TDs   6 Ints

Our off tackle and wham plays were REALLY solid even against the best teams
WOn semifinal came from behind at the half awesome game kids showed a lot of heart

FInal game against team that NO team had scored agianst their first team D- just 3 TDs in blowout games against their backups
We scored on opening drive
2nd drive pounding it, QB gets striped on 4 yard line as he's going in
Lost 3 turnovers- including perfectly executed onside kick
Messed up another drive on their 12 yd line thanks to an offsides on my rookie MPR lineman
Lost 34-20

Kids fought to the very final whistle and had tears in their eyes and voices cracked when they talked which brought big smiles to me big time

At banquet the team mom gave me this thing made out of 3x5 cards where the kids had written what playing for me has meant to them.

Wow- great season, really proud of the kids and what we were able to do with a patchwork of kids- constantly moving kids around and re configuring
We had new 5& 6 grade team this year- so I didnt have the luxury of a bunch of kids- I let them take all the new kids- some really good players
Our Oline was made up of 3 kids who had never started and 2 that were MPRs
They really played well together and our running game was helped by a QB that got more physical as the season progressed

So won our division
Lost to league winners 2 times and avenged loss to the 3rd place team in Semis
NEVER had this many kids out due to foot injuries and sickness

Care to share what they wrote?

Lots of thanks for pushing me, helping me become a better player/person, believing in me, why I love football
letting me be part of the team- making me feel part of the team etc

Awesome team mom- very good parents

Good stuff for 12 year olds

We had a lot of fun starting off 0-2 and all the close games- come from behind games- ALL the injuries- INSANE weather, sick kids and of course the loss of 4 of our very best players- AND me working a very heavy work schedule- 50-60 hour weeks
When we lost 3 two way starters on the line and arguably our 2 best players on the team- then our best long ball threat- starting corner- before our first practice- lots of people were kinda hoping we could get to .500-  so making it to the title game and giving the bullys a scare was pretty darned fun. We got on a really nice roll down the stretch. In title game Down by a couple of scores in the second half the kids were playing with their hair on fire- hard, fast and spirited- was cool to watch

CRAZIEST year for weather
We had at least 4-5 practices rained out- we only had 10 practices before game 1
Game 1 torrential downpour- our area many spots 4 inches of rain in 1 day- opening day- no lightning so we played em all, I was freezing my butt off in mid August
Game 2 rain and wind
Several others rain
Game 8 Sleet, rain, wind
Game 9 SNOWED out- they cancelled all games that day- heavy wet and windy snow

My son had an outstanding season. Went from part time starter on O-line to full time starter and integral part- had to play a number of spots, including Center, LG, RT and PT. He had a blast, got a lot better and really enjoyed himself. He was all tears after the game- even 10 minutes later. He really wanted to win it all- was very cool to see- I was 100% smiles after the final whistle. His blocking to and maybe a little bit past the whistle on every play no matter where he was on the field or who the opponent was (he went against some huge athletic kids)- was an inspiration to other kids. Probably my worst over all athleticism on an Oline in last 6-7 seasons but by far the best efforting oline weve had in a long time- Michael would have been impressed.

Special thanks to my trusted and talented friend MH Coach- Joe C for all the help via phone this season.

Next season- Im going to assistant coach for a combined 7&8 grade team. My 7 grade coach has had his kids since 3rd grade. My kids and his will combine
He is great coach, former captain of a DII College team. Has 2 sons playing on this team. He knows and runs my system well

We have been the overall most dominant program in our league which was the biggest in state- now second biggest
HOWEVER when we expanded this year and had a rookie team with a LOT of new coaches on it, two of our 6 teams had losing records
I think in the last 10 years we might have had 4 teams with losing records. Some years we lost a grand total of 1-5 games combined

So next season Im going to assist with my sons team but help out our struggling teams. I had 2 great assistants- combined with the older teams very good coaches- we will have plenty and allow me to get our other teams back on track. I know it will be good for my players to get a fresh set of eyes on them and different approach for 1 year. We always lose a lot of kids to Middle School ball- so combining our teams makes sense.

We do NOT have an MPR rule- but I enforce my own standard. Had I kept all the 6th graders from our combined team- I would have had 29 kids and would probably have won it all- they had several of our missing pieces. But I was content with having 20 kids and letting everyone get more playing time. We are looking at same approach next year- fielding more teams with smaller numbers.

Thanks, the truth is you did a great job coaching this year. You had limited talent & got them to the final game.

You know my dear friend I am always available.

Thanks Joe

On another note- we did have 3 of our 6 teams play in the finals
We won one of those at the 5th grade single grade level
Lost by 1 score in the 7th grade single grade level
Lost by 2 scores in the 6th grade single grade level

My goal is to get all 6 teams to the finals and that's going to require me NOT to head coach the older team
