The guys I coach with, do a lot of "experimenting."  It drives me crazy. You would drive me crazy. I mean that with all the respect in the world. I really only want to run 1 play, power, and I put super power and counter with that. In my league, no defense, if we execute can stop that play. They are coached well enough to stop it.

When up by 3 or 4 scores....why run your bread and butter? Seems like the best time to go deep into the a playbook and see whats up.

mahonz, i take my hat off to you, that's impressive.  legit two platooning is tough, and takes some really good coaching to get everyone in where they can help(or at least not hurt) the team.  at the youth level, i prioritized getting all players significant time over everything, so i'm really impressed by what you've apparently done.

if you are gonna wear folks out, maybe you could do a little no huddle?  that'd really grind em down!

We are 100% check with me no huddle with keywords to go fast.

I wish I could two platoon every season. It think its the biggest swing and a miss for any youth Org that has the numbers.

Our MPR is 15 per game. By halftime we have 1-3 players that are at 12 or so. This means even the low men on the totem pole are getting 20-25 plays per game while the "starters" get half the game which is typically 40-50 plays.

So starters stay fresh and MP's get more time on the field.

Some complain about specialization. I dont think two platooning would be all that popular with the little dudes but as they hit the 5th or 6th grade most have dialed into a favorite position(s) if they have played a few seasons already.

Last Spring we had 32 players and two platooned. This Spring we had all the players that played D last Spring opt to play O this Spring and visa versa. Some opted to change sides, others did not.

For me....as the speed of the game increases Orgs should load up roster sizes if they have the numbers so that the players are keeping their hit counts down. With 7th graders....by seasons end with a roster of say 20...the kids are spent. With a roster of 30 they are not.

But you are right...two platooning requires a Staff. I am the DC. I have a DL Coach, a LB'rs Coach and a DB's Coach. They all handle their own players too include all rotations. On any given play you might see 2 on and 2 off or 5 on and 5 off or no rotation at all. They all handle their own Groups while I work on my tan.  8)

Game one we did manage to run a play with 12 on the field. No Flag ! Yesterday we did manage to run a play with 10 on the field. So we are still learning to dance as a Staff.

a companion point to what you are talking about-numbers, is this:

when kids don't play, they don't play.  so many kids quit because they are barely seeing the field.  i realize there is more to it than that, but that is a big one.

if you are playing everyone, and changing their positions year to year, you are a lot more likely to get a very high percentage of kids returning.  they got to play, and they might get to try something new.

so i think your system is, at least in part, a possible solution to declining numbers.

not that it will be used widely.  so many coaches want to play their 15 best the whole game, it's sad.

How the general masses roll at the youth level is pretty sad. I used to be able to 2 platoon every season but they changed the rules because they considered teams with high rosters "Super Teams".

Nope....we just had a better plan than those that only wanted to play their best 15.

Take an average kid and teach him nothing but the MIKE position for 100 days and watch what happens. Now that kid gets pretty darn good at something and will keep playing rather than being the afterthought year after year.

Now that does not work for every player. Some kids just are not cut out for football but generally...most every kid can become good at something given the chance.

We have two players on this Spring team that are worthless. Harsh but true. Not even sure why they play Spring ball. The rest of the players have some talent and are football geeks. Still...everyone gets their plays.

I truly believe two platooning is far and away the better option. Just have to train a few selfish parents every now and then.

I have coached in my current Org for 5 years now. Every year there has been 6 teams in my Org in my age group. Just last season I was able to wrench out enough kids to be able to two platoon about 75%. I started playing the safety card and its working. The older the kids get....the roster numbers should go UP !...even if that means you fold a team that is struggling.

That thought process was totally alien too them.

What these Orgs fear going with higher rosters is calls from parents complaining about playing time.  I simply told them they would not be hearing from anyone on my team and if they did...I'd just go ahead and cut them loose.   :P

( Cutting is illegal in my League )

Back in action after our bye week and then a weather delay. Finally got back to playing tonight vs our hated rival. Been playing this team nearly every Spring and Fall season since the 2nd grade. No love.

We were up 40-0 at the half. Had two more TD's negated off penalties in the second half.  One a beautiful pick 6 but got a 15 yard ding during the run back. Game ended 40-0.

This opponent has no class. Great athletes...poorly coached. Game ended with them in a 3rd a probably 50 there were so many flags at the end. Lots of jawing right about the time they got into the only scoring position all game.

Surprised we crushed them like we did. Its usually a better game. My Defensive Staff did a superior job. Both Spurs and our MIKE were benched due to trouble at school. We absolutely beat the chit out of them mentally and physically.  Great coaching.

Game of the season next week. Two undefeated arch rivals going at it. Gonna be a dog fight. Whoever wins this game typically ends up the Champions.

4-0.

Mmm kay. Let me see if I cant keep all this in chronological order.

We are up 14-8 after a very spirited and energetic first half.

Late in the 3rd they hit us with a beautiful 60 yard bomb. Coverage was great, throw was better.

4th Q we trade a couple quick series. We are down 16-14.

We fail to convert on 4th down at about our own 40. They go for the jugular with about 6:00 minutes left in the game. Deep pass hits the top of our CB's helmet who is running stride for stride and goes 20 feet straight up in the air. One of our OLBs' runs under it and returns it to mid field. We quickly drive down first and goal from the 10 and cant score due to an illegal hands to the face penalty that took us out of FG range and striking range. They quickly go 3 and out and punt...we get really good field position but after a 30 yard gain on a great catch and run we throw a pick at their 10 with about 2:00 left....they punt with 38 seconds left in the game from their own 15...all timeouts have been burned for both teams....one of our DT's takes the football right off the punters foot and runs it in for the TD. Literally....the football never left his foot as he kicked it right into our DT's belly and he never missed a beat to the endzone.

We squib....defend two plays playing cover 8....get a pick....take a knee....game over.

We win....22-16 in ridiculous fashion. Last year we beat em 13-12 by returning an on side kick for a TD late in the game. Its good to be lucky but its better when you practice all ST's for 20 minutes per day.  It does pay off.  ;) ;)

Only undefeated team left !

5-0....#1 seed baby.  8)

Next opponent is    I N    T  R  O  U  B  L  E.  We are now...the machine.

***DB's Coach called the game today while I worked on my tan. Did a great job vs a scary good opponent !

congrats.

i think i read somewhere that when a team blocks a punt they win like 80% of the time.  of course, it isn't usually in that fashion...

Lame Lazy Selfish Pathetic is about all I have to say about our Defense today.

We had to blitz relentlessly just of make a play. We only gave up 12 but it could have been 40. This opponent marched up and down the field for 4 Q's. A big fat Red F for effort today. So much so that for the first time ever we gave our Defensive Crunch Bar to the opposing QB. Kid deserved it. Tore us a new one.

Fortunately our Offense is an absolute machine and scored 54 points with ZERO help from their Brothers on Defense.

6-0 and not too thrilled about it right now.

Finished up the Regular Season with a nice win vs a pretty good team. We did a film exchange with this team all season so we both had lots of film on one another so it was a bit of a defensive battle.

Would have been a closer game but we scored on an 80 yard KOR, a 60 yard punt return and 60 yard pick 6.

There were also 3 FG attempts total by both teams, all no good but pretty good we both could at least try with 7th graders. That is something that I have noticed this Spring. There are some REALLY good kickers. Our punter is incredible.

A 37-8 win.

We finish as the number one seed at 7-0 and play in the Championship Bowl Game on Friday 6/2.

Fun season. Good group of parents, kids and coaches. Today was the first game all season where we had all hands on deck. All 29 players and all 7 coaches....finally !  Up to now we have always been missing at least one due to sickness or injury.
