Scrimmage
« on: September 06, 2018, 02:54:06 PM »
So last night, we scrimmaged the team we were rained out against last Saturday.  We went to their practice field.  It was pretty informal; half-field, each offense gets 10-15 plays, do-overs are allowed, coaches standing around the field, no refs.

At one point, one of our defensive players waves at our header.  It didn't mean anything; kid is 10-years-old so he waves at Coach W.  Coach W smiles and waves back.  At that point, one of "their" coaches asks if we are using hand signals.  Coach W says "No, he was just waving to me."  So their coach says, "Oh, I thought it might be some sort of hand signal since this guy (indicating me) is standing so close to our huddle."  (I'm watching our line play.)  Coach W says, "No, we don't have any hand signals."  On the next play, our OLB makes a tackle in their backfield for about a 3-4 yard loss.  I hollar across the field, "Coach W, y'know why Jason was able to make that play?"  He says, "No, why?"  I hollar, "I can hear all of their plays so I just give a hand signal to our defense so that they know which play is coming."  Good grief....

I don't know what's lamer:  A wave as a "hand signal," or them thinking I care about what, where or how they run a play.

Scored a few.  Gave up a few.  We need better hand signals.

Oh, absolutely.  Nothing like a Big W against a scrimmage opponent.

Y'know at that point, I was ready to just start making up "signs:" twitches, winks, clearing my throat loudly and deliberately, a big yawn while stretching my arms and pointing at something, randomly pointing at one of their players and hollaring a code ("Hey!  Hey!  867-5309!") ::)

You should have really blown his mind and told him you had scouted him for the scrimmage and had full tendency reports done up.
