Scrimmage today.
« on: August 12, 2017, 08:15:07 AM »
First scrimmage in 2 hours.  Little nervous since my original OC left and took all his materials with him we had to do a hasty install of UBSW in two weeks with 13 players.  Plays look good against traffic cones and pad dads at the POA but we'll see how they execute against a live opponent.
2 teams, 10 plays each on offense and defense.

Trying to keep my expectations reasonable and our goals realistic.  No turnovers on O and get at least one on D.  Get in the end zone at least once vs each team. We'll see what happens.

Had two no shows today so went into the scrimmage with only 11.

Played the home team first,   They had about 30 kids so I was a bit anxious.  Had a few bad snaps because the center had some jitters and was firing them high and hard.  Cost us a fumble but we got him calmed down and he was fine the rest of the time.  We put it in the end zone 3 times, once on 16 Power that broke wide open another on an 18 Sweep Pass where our 4 slipped and fell so our 1 pulled it down and ran it in from 40 yards out, and lastly on a Reverse.  On defense we recovered 2 fumbles and my field CB picked them once.

The highlight for me was when we had a kid come out with a boo boo while they were on our 10 yard line.  Our D stopped them 5 times with only ten players.

Next up we played a division 1 team who lost in the semifinals last season to the eventual league champions.  We scored once on 18 Sweep after two consecutive wedge plays.  On defense we notched two fumbles from bad pitches and were able to keep them out of the end zone until the second last play.

Over all I'd say it was better than I expected.  But there's still plenty to work on.  Wedge is looking a little rough and my 2 back kept trying to leave the wedge.  Blocking was good but we need to work on who to block some more.  Pass pro needs work for sure. Tackling and pursuit looked good, ball get off and block shedding needs to improve.

Thanks but my players deserve the credit.  Scheme and technique aside my biggest worry was how they'd respond, since with our low numbers this was really the first time they went live.  They took the other teams' best shots and didn't fold.

Thats on you Brother....all on you.

This Manta that when the team does well its on the players is PC BS coaches speak. We have all seen talented teams with good numbers suck eggs. Sounds like you made a prefect example out of those kinds of teams today.
