Spring so far
« on: April 20, 2017, 09:57:26 AM »
So we are playing 7v7, real 7v7, Center not eligible, one or two hand touch (below the neck). Pretty much my entire fall team is participating. Meaning I have Olinemen playing LB, slot receiver, safety in some cases :P

We are currently 2-1-1 (the tie because the crew was late and so the sun was down when regulation ended, to dark).

Defensively, we are not doing that swell, we have played 4 games and given up 77 points. Not complaining though, like I said, I have olineman playing DB. they understand their assignments, they just are too slow to cover the folks that they are playing against. We are playing cover 4 with the LBs playing zone underneath. We do have 2 pick 6s in the games, one by my tackle, and one by a kid who probably is going to play CB for us in the fall.

Offensively, pretty darn happy, we have scored 77 points, most in the league. I have the offense loaded up with my ball guys and have them playing in the positions they are likely going to be playing in the fall. I want them to get plenty of reps as we are changing from DTDW to a Spread Pistol offense.

The offense is really pretty simple, lots of crosses for man and lots of floods against zone. We always have a vertical route on the outside and a route for MOFO and the back is a check down most of the time (we have one play where he runs a wheel between the 1 and 2 which gets him open as long as I don't call it too many times :)).

Our scoring should be a lot better...we drop a bunch of balls and our QB sometimes makes some really bad reads and decisions, but once again, they are going from football in a phone booth to spread. We are getting better each week though, the drops and bad reads/throws/decisions are becoming less frequent.

This week we play the first place team, for first place (they are 3-1), it ought to be a pretty good test, they play some really good defense, only giving up 34 points in the 4 games, and their offense scores too, they are second in the league in scoring behind us. Our second game of the evening is against the team tied for 3rd at 2-2, they play pretty good defense, but their offense is not so good (shut out in their 2 losses).
None of them suck, they just haven't found what the kid is good at yet.

Good deal.

We started practice today. We return most of our offense so it should be fun.

We started this week.  Our returners have been snapped up by the Varsity.

We return 10/11 starters. All 5 Olinemen + their 2 backups. We lack depth at QB & RB but the starters are very good. We are in helmets again today, shells Monday, full pads Wednesday.

The only Runningback candidates we have are freshmen who did not play football this past season.  The previous regime seems to have alienated a lot of people.  The starters on the offensive line (who are now sophomores) have already been bumped up.

2 of our starting WR's returned from baseball. I think our DC went home tonight to mix the Cyanide & grape kool-aide. I tried to reassure him that we would just far ahead because we have so many returners. Honestly, we just had a very good day. It is early & I am already worrying about depth.

Depth? lol  I'm just looking for bodies.

The Varsity header asked me how our talent compared to my previous high schools.  I told him, "It doesn't."

At CHS and GHHS all we had to do was make an announcement and 85 showed up after school.  (Of course that was 4A and now I'm at 3A, but the difference in culture is HUGE.)

I don't think culture has to with the number of A's, but with the number of W's. We had 110 players on the field yesterday &
we still have another 15 running track & playing baseball & lacrosse. Our 4x100 has won the Regional & the District now moves on to States. The Lacrosse team is in the final 4. Baseball sucks but the season is longer. we have a Pole Vaulter, High jumper & a Shot Putter still going.

The biggest change is the defense on the field. Their attitude & commitment level is more in line with the offense. I don't know if it will translate, but I hope so. We fired 4/5 defensive coaches & the new guys are at least bringing energy.

Coaching players for a couple of years makes a huge difference. The returners set the attitude. we have significantly turned up the tempo in practice more to my liking. I came off the field yesterday sweaty & knew I had a practice which meant they did too. Our WR coach came off the field & looked at me & said he was tired. The new DLine coach is one of my former players, he played in college & still plays Arena League. Aside from a lot of energy some old Coach Joe stories are absolutely hysterical.

I went off on WR throwing the ball back in a drill, he told everyone wow Coach Joe has mellowed with age.

No, culture doesn't have anything to do with the classification.  My point is that this being a 3A school, it's smaller than my two previous stops and when you're the 10th and 12th largest school in the state, it can be easy to have 85 show up in the spring.  At a 3A, I don't expect to get 4A numbers, but my concern is damage the previous regime did to the culture.

That is what you do, I am sure you get them right very fast. I will be interested to see if you throw the ball more, now that you have been exposed to the dark side.

We will probably run more with our line.

--Absolutely no idea at this point.  Hugh Wyatt is coming here in May to give a clinic on his Open Wing.  I should know more by then.

Today is the first day of full pads! We have been getting after it pretty good in shells, so I am excited for full pads. Yesterday we ran an RPO that was slicker than snot! The backer we read was blitzing so we pulled & hit the slant where he was, it happened so fast the defense never knew what happened.

I'm just trying to get them to understand the concept of Toss.  It's interesting to have high school kids whose concept of football is much the same as a 7-9.  But then, I should be used to that age group.  It's just been a very long time.  I have found a Center.  But that is all I have found.  I'm walking around here with my eyes as wide as saucers and my jaw on the ground.
